Best gunsmith in Canada?

Mick McPhee has his name on the BC Provincial and Lt Governors prize winning rifles over the past 5 or 6 yrs.

He has built my 4 F-Class rigs (3 XR-100's and 1 M700) and he specializes in working with the Rem actions.

I wouldn't take my work anywhere else.

this pic of 15 Shots at 300m from one of the XR's on a .4moa V-Bull speaks for itself. Of course....this is coming from one of those "interwebz snipers" :jerkit:

Now that is one nice Ruger, mind if I ask who built that?
Ed Begg built 8 of these rifles, in various calbres - this one is in 6mmBR, with a Smith barrel and now resides in Manitoba.
I have another in 308 wwith a McPhee barrel and is as accurate as any Mick has built.
Another buddy has one of them in 6.5X284 that turns heads every time he lights it up at the Medicine Hat range.
If you are interested, I am not doing any competitive shooting anymore, and may be persuaded to part with the 308!:D

I personally use Mick for all my own rifles. He is absolutely exceptional. I also recommend other such as Dennis Sorenson, Bill Leeper, Henrey Rempel, and the folks at Corlanes. There are more....

All the very best shooters I know use either Remington actions, or customs. No need to mention their barrels.....:)

I can't speak for all of them, but generally speaking, these smiths take your components and put them togther, They don't sell complete guns on "spec" except for businesses such as ATRS, PGW, V-Bull precision etc.

Another important point when you are considering a 'smith. Talk to them about your project, and figure out if your personalities and expectations are compatible. I one had a smith, who is a very respected TR and SR shooter, hand me a F/Tr gun, built on a custom action, with top shelf components, and say, " that'll shoot a minute, so you should do well with it." Having said that, there are some very good, often unsung local guys who do very good work. They often have quicker turn around, better prices, and smaller egos than some of the top names you hear spoken about.

Ed had many very nice rifles,I bought one recently from him that Mick McPhee put together, but it hasn't even been fired it yet.

Henry Remple in Calgary.

Ask around the precision crowd in AB. His name will come up. No neon lights, but just shoot his work!! ;)

SHHHSH. Be quiet. He does not exist. Moved. Can't find him.

We need to keep Henry to ourselves! Don't need him getting loaded up from all across the country! :HR:

He is also a super nice guy. And an excellent F Class shooter.

Corlanes builds some of the best hunting rifles around. Tim and Rod are upstanding gentlemen.

I hope to get to know Dennis Sorensen a bit too as his reputation is excellent.

There's an old addage in manufacturing...
"I can build anything you want, but you gotta tell me what you want."

This is so true in gunsmitthing and if the rifle does not shoot to your expectations, it can often be attributed to what you requested.

This brings up the question of why it was requested in the first place. If time, cost and weight are your concerns, the price will be invariably be paid in terms of your satisfaction.

There are 2 sides to every coin and everything is a trade off.

To stack the deck in your favour you need to start with a great barrel. The Rem 700 action is ok depending on the stock you glue it into. Thats right, you need to glue it in to maximize it's potential. At a minimum you need an AICS or better would be one of the tube guns.

If you dont like that idea, then you will at least need to use a one piece scope base and liberally glue it to the action with JB weld. It will help prevent the banana bending due to the poor mid section strength. It's basically a poor mans way of replicationg a surgeon action.

Dont be fooled by certain gunsmiths who charge big bucks because the have CNC lathe. That is no assurance the job will be done any better than on an engine lathe. It's the nut behind the butt.

You should start with a call to Joe Kroetch in Ontario to do your barrel and action work at a fair price.

What you spec out will be why you are happy in the end.

i would go for ARMTECK IN SHERBROOKE QUEBEC, the Gaulin's brothers operate the shop and i know that they are well known accross canada for the guns they make, you can reach them on the net. They are very competent in their work. These two guys are
specialists of the remington and they will make you one of their own if you so disire.

BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA

I forgot about those.....yeah send your stuff to Obtunded. He has cut down on his drinking while machining. I think he's down to 2 bottles of Vino/session as opposed to the 4 he used to drink.....or is it 3 while machining and 2 while loading....I forget.

:D:D:D

Yeah, send me your Stevens 200's :HR::evil:

And i don't drink vino.... only cheese-eating, pufter house painters drink that crap.

RUM!! Rum Dammit!

It doesn't matter what you get built. You can buy a stock Rem700 Police(Tactical) or a Savage 10FP and it will shoot with the best of them. A lot has to do with who pulls the trigger.
