As the title asks, what product do you think offers the best hearing protection while hunting?

Are some of the high end electronic muffs up to the task? Maybe suggest a “cost no object” and a “best bang for the buck”.

I wear molded earplugs from work. I twist them out a bit for hearing and if it’s time to shoot I just push them into place proper. I would really like to get a set of the custom molded electronic plugs which allow normal to improved hearing but they cut off all noises above safe decibel levels. They would be just the ticket for bird hunting.

I don't like wearing hearing protection when I'm hunting. I may only fire one shot in a week, and I dislike the constriction on my head/ears. Having that said, the electronic muffs are good ( for short periods of time) to assist in hearing better in the woods. In my garage I can hear the cat walk across the cement floor, not so without them. If I'm on a goose hunt and see the flock coming, I do have time to put them on.

Never worn hearing protection while hunting, and my hearing is still fine after 45 years.

Even 1 shot without hearing protection damages your hearing. I typically fire between 2 and 5 shots while hunting with a centerfire rifle every season.

Howard Leights is what I wear while hunting or anytime I’m shooting, I have hearing loss from when I was a kid and in my teens so I never shoot without ear pro. Electronic ear pro while hunting is great as you can turn up or down the ambient noise while in the woods, also keeps your ears warm come late oct and nov.

I like the amazon.ca Howard liets (60$ish) only time I didn’t like them was waterfowl hunting and trying to blow the duck call while wearing them.
Comfortable on my big melon and pack down super small.

If one is using a shotgun and shooting lots of ammo in a session, I'd wear ear protection, if I'm hunting deer, no need, one doesn't even hear the shot.

Exactly...wierd that someone would wear hearing protection while hunting

Modern electronic hearing protection can amplify sounds so you actually hear more than without it- and then shut the noise off when you shoot. So why not wear something like that?

That’s auditory exclusion, you still get hearing damage even though your brain shuts off your hearing.

Exactly. Don’t kid yourself- shooting without hearing protection causes permanent hearing damage.

Have you ever hunted waterfowl? Upland birds on a good day? Be crazy not to wear protection. Even a single rifle shot during a big game hunt is enough. Between work and guns my ears are subject to enough, I like to do what I can to preserve them.

I should really pony up the $$$ for the electronic molded ear plugs (esp I believe), put em in in the am and take them out when the hunts done. Get the benefit of icreased audiability and protection.
