Best high power scope for under $400?

Yes I know that is not a big budget...

I purchased a leupold 3-9x40 for my .223 remington but I find the lack of magnification a big problem for those 200+ yard shots.

I am looking at something that is at least 18x or up and was wondering what the best budget ones are?

So far I have seen the simmons predator and the hi-lux atr
 
Bushnell Elite Tactical 10x has decent glass for the price, and is regarded as being an excellent value.

If you can up your budget to around $600, get one of the Sightron fixed power scopes.
 
I'm looking for a new scope and this would be my question too. I'm currently torn between a Millett and a Vortex Viper. They both have roughly the same power and within the same price range, but most reviews comparing the two recommend the Vortex.

Anyone have other suggestions? Your 2cents perhaps?
 
i have a bushnell banner 6x18x50 on my 22-250 and cant complain a bit and it only cost me 150$ i have alot more expensive scopes on other rifles i own but i was doing up a stevens 200 and diddent want to sink a pile of cash into it ... but honestly its almost as good as my elite 4200 or my vx2 the internals may be different or the quality maybe ???but in low light or at high magnification its pretty good... just my 2 cents...happy shooting...
 
If you have the patience you should be able to find a Bushnell Elite 4200 in the 4-18 ish range for under 400, sometimes they even come with flip caps. I have had a couple 4200s' and they have never let me down.

I have both, I like both...but the vortex has better glass IMHO.

The millett TRS-1 4-16x50 on my .223 tracks well and has proven itself.

The Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 Just seems like more scope to me better glass, resetable turrets, etc. (will be buying another)

The Bushnell 10x's Tactical is a great scope but like the OP I don't feel it is enough magnification at all.

I want to be able to spot my shots without a spotting scope.

OP, I would keep your eye on the EE. As already mentioned......
 
The Bushnell Elite 5-15x40 is a pretty good scope for the money. I have the Tactical model with mildots, large target knobs and adjustable objective. Hard to beat for around $400.00

The 4200 is now known as just the "Elite" series. Its a 4:1 magnification series. I have the 4-16x40. It was $458 at Sail. I got it on a no HST day and there is also a $75 mail in rebate. Net Cost of about $385 tax in. I know there are Bushnell haters out there but this is hard to beat for JAPAN made optics. I am new to firearms but not new to optics. Bushnell Elite or Elite 6500 is awesome value. BTW, Used this scope for the first time on my Tikka 204. Just awesome only I wish I got the 6-24. ;-)
 
I may be off the mark here because you are asking for something 18x and up, but what about a Nikkon Coyote Special? The 4.5x14x40 is $400. They are not realy good for target shooting but they get good reviews from predator hunters. I guess it depends what your looking to use it for.

I just bought a redfield revenge 6-18x44 and it is amazing...super clear at all magnifications and it came in just under $300 after the rebate...I think its the best value for the money personally
 
Mueller 8-32X44. If memory serves around $300, excellent glass, target dot and crosshairs, side focus, sun shade. Much better scope than a Nikon buck masters 6-18X40. No problem aiming at 223 bullet hits on steel at slightly over 200 yards. Superb side to side clarity at high magnification for that kind of coin. A real sleeper. I wish I had the distribution rights for these scopes in Canada.
