I know 800 yards is a bit far for a real humane kill shot but what would you guys think would be the "best" hunting cartridge for that range. Just incase that once in a lifetime B&C ram is far away but you want that one mounted on the wall.

7mm? .300?.264?......????

7mm Mag or .300 Mag are good choices out to that distance, but do you have the skill to take an animal at that distance? Plus you will have to look up the knock down value for a specific bullet you intend to use. Say between 1500-1000 lb/ft of force to dispatch white tail humanely with one shot.

Haha I like the 50 idea but I don't want to blow the thing apart haha.

Yes I do have the skill to make a shot like that hopefully I don't have to ever make that long of a shot while hunting. I like to think I'm a better hunter then that so I can get in closer. But what cartridge would carry enough "knockdown power" at that range. Excluding the 50 haha

Bullet choice would be critical as a bullet good for 300 yd velocities might pencil through at extended range and extended range bullets might blow up close in, plus you would need to know the difference in poi for the long range bullet compared to the medium range. Too much math for me. I know a group of guy's who hunt long range with a rifle they put together for just this purpose and they don't take shots under 600 yds as they don't believe the bullet they use would work below that range.

Gotta love these threads. If you are capable of making the shot I'd assume you've done your research on the ballistics and performance of various cartridges suited for those distances and shouldn't feel the need to ask. 99.9% of hunters in general (although there are those who exist and have the proper experience and skills) don't have the experience of shooting big game at 800 yards. That being said a big 300 or 7mm (wby, rum, mag, etc...) should have the desired performance and energy to knock down your target at those ranges. I couldn't agree more with Hoyt though...

Best of luck and may you have all the time and practice required to make such a shot, ethically.

The BEST 800 yard cartridge on game is a .30/30 plus a 700 yard stalk...

Well said!!! Too many variables for responsible hunting at 800 yards - trophy of a lifetime or not. Get the cartridge that has adequate power and that you shoot most accurately. Practice and practice. Then do some actual hunting with good stalking.

there's a table that gives you the mpbr of any cartridge- that's plus or minus 3 inches ie a 6 inch spread- that's the range you SHOULD be good at- then take a look at the hold over for the next set yardage and that's why you shouldn't attempt anything further- i'll explain- the 308 w, 180 grains, travelling at 2610 fps( common factory vel) has a mpbr( maximum point blank range) of 267 yards- it's 276 for the '06, and 325 for the 300 win mag- however, move the sticks back to 400, and you have to hold over some 44 inches to hit the 267 yard zero- I don't like throwing a full yard above my target, let alone a yard plus

.50 BMG, anything below...
x2, 50 or 338 lapua for the long range stuff and carry a 308 usually in the bush, if an animal presents at range there is lots of time to get out/go get the long range rifle.

They will do the job in close too, just not worth carrying as a primary rifle as there are few spots that give this opertunity in my province.

Agree...it ain't hunting if you don't have to leave your porch...
