I have my dads 300 savage that he purchased new some time in mid to late 50s and my cousin has our grandfathers 303 savage with a hexagon barrel both still work like new and group tight !!! Great old rifles

I like my 45-70 but I am 75 yards at most in my area.

My favourite lever gun for hunting is my Winchester 71 in 348 WCF. For something that’s easier to find ammo for I like my Winchester 94s in 32 Special and 30-30.

Personally I don't have any of the larger calibers I m stuck on the 308 used it for years I find it's pretty well all around calibre for my purpose if the day ever comes I switch up to larger game will consider heavier options

308 has no dust on it.

Chickens too as a Marlin 1895 will shoot 2.5" .410 shells. You have to single feed them.

For decades I guided with a Marlin in .444
I would shoot grouse and ptarmigan with 2.5" .410 shells, loaded like a single shot and the Marlin ejected them without issue or bulges. Never tried it with a 45-70. But with a .444, it is perfect.

You can even load the chicken loads right in the 45-70 brass, or the 444 brass for that matter. Then seal either with wax or cardboard/glue. Worked great with the hornady brass.

44 mag under 125yds. No need to find a blood trail. It's all over the grass and trees

I brought a 30-30 on this draw hunt because I said to myself 'if I can't shoot a sheep with a 30-30 I'm no hunter'. I've also taken several moose with either a .303 savage or .308 savage 99. My favourite? The .303 Savage. The best? Whatever you like best 43" dall (and 7/8s)
