300 RUM is overkill unless you already own the rifle.
But anything from a sharp stick to a 50bmg and up will do the job.
If he is expecting long shots it's a fine choice. Aside from the cost, recoil and impressive muzzle blast anyway.
True, but if he has the skills necessary to make the sort of long shot you'd want/need an Ultramag for, I doubt he'd be asking the question in the first place? Its not like a 30-06 will just bounce off at 350yds...
Great point... I guess I was just defending a cartridge I don't really like. I'm hunting Elk for the first time this year. I figure since they hang out all around me why not shoot one of the tasty beasts? I thought my grandad's .303 was a bit big for it. The RUM cartridges are overpowered for anything you plan to shoot under 500m, IMO at least.
What do you all think the best Moose hunting caliber is? I am thinking of going with a .300 Ultramag..thoughts?
.22 Hornet........

In canada? 303 Brit. Most moose kills are within 150 yds. Unless you are hunting farm land then you need a 338 lapua or a 375 hh.
In truth anything between 7mm ( 7-08- 7 RM ) to a .45 will kill moose.
Probably 30-30 or 303 have killed more canadian moose than others. Good ol 30-06 is a good choice too.
As with most larger game matching bullet construction to task is most important. I'd say a 300RUM is not a great choice if using 208 eldm or 200 gr eldx pushed fast unless shots will be past 300 yds or so.
My grandfather bagged 52 moose with his 30-30. All but one was a 1 shot kill.
That’s because he shot them within 50m. Everyone knows moose have now evolved to never let a hunter within 500m, and their hides are much thicker than they used to.
Spot on advise . I am a old bugger killed more than my share . 10feet to 140 yards my longest in Ontario boreal woods and swamps our big thing was to drop them before they went to water shoulder hit with a 250grain 35 and 338 caliber for me.
