Best Moose Caliber

Racking my brain to try and remember the last time I actually saw anyone hunting with a 303

It's true ..... All the cheapo entry guns from the last 15yrs put all those 303s away. I'd rather hunt with a Savage or Marlin X7 anyways than a worked over milsurp.

I remember, it'll be 37 years ago this fall. Probably the same day as the last time I saw someone use a 30-30.

Come out to the Ontario deer woods... Don't see .303 Brits anymore, but lots of guys still using .30-30's. I get that the cartridge isn't a great Western choice, but 90% of the time it is no handicap here for deer.

I believe you for there. Here, not so much. If I want to take a handicap I’ll use a muzzleloader and get a special season to go with it :).

My brother in law uses a 300 RUM for everything, but he waste quite a bit of meet on most everything he shoots. Since we usually shoot moose inside of 200yards, I think that rifle is not the best choice... but he’s happy with it!!
My dad as been using a 338 lapua for that last two seasons and guys he hunt with have made the same comments regarding meat wastage...
i used a 30-06 on all my moose, never lost one, most took one shot some took 2 and only one so far needed more than that and it wasn’t the gun’s fault lol!!

My daughter got her first moose last week.
125yds with a 7mm-08, shooting some reloaded 139gr BTSP Hornady Interlock’s.

One shot through the lungs, and the moose wandered bewildered in a bit of a circle, then laid down and expired.

Perfect bullet performance too.

115gr. Or 82% weight retention.

408 lbs weighed in at the butcher. So likely 850-900lbs on the hoof.
