Best moose rifle for 300 plus yards

Are you secretly trying to be Kamlooky? Copying his Avatar that he had for many years.

A couple days ago, he commented that he didn't like my previous avatar, and suggested that I should change it.

Sure, sure, Halloweens over, get rid of the fuggly mask.

WTF is a mephisto? 🥴

I sincerely hope that he will like my new avatar.

:)

Bullet construction, speed and placement of the bullet at impact range is the most important factors. Even if you luck a big magnum, poor bullet choice, and poor shot placement can make it not perform.

300wsm is a great choice with, personally I would throw in some of my 190, or 210 grain accubond long range bullets, if you are expecting further shots. If not then I would use basically any bonded bullet.

270wsm is also a great choice with proper bullets. Here is a ballistic chart of my old lady's 270wsm loaded with a 180 grain woodleigh bullet. It has experience dropping moose.

I've always used a 338win with the old 230gr back talon/failsafe Winchester ammo and I can state that it goes through a moose from any angle and at any range I've shoot one from (out to around 300m, haven't tried longer).

What is the best moose rifle for 300 plus yards
Any of the usual magnums. Given the choice, I'd stay away from the short mags. A 300wm or 7mm RM will give you more flexibility and better performance with heavier bullets. And ammo is cheaper and easier to find. Even hand loading - brass is everywhere for the 300wm.

That said, there's no reason you couldn't just use a 30-06 or 270 or 6.5x55 etc. at that range either.

lol I am looking at a 300 wsm
With either the 180 or 200 gr bullets, this is a good choice for moose from 300-500 yards, if you are capable of accurately placing the bullet in the vitals from field shooting positions. To date I have used the 180 gr AccuBonds (handloads) and Power Points (factory ammo) on moose from my 300 WSM, and both worked just fine.
Mind you, in 38 years of hunting, my longest shot on moose a to date, and the shot was just 220 yards (with a 7mm STW with 160 gr bullet), and my average shot distance is just 132 yards. (And I have taken game ranging from antelope to bison, from 5-475 yards.)

Other good choices would be the 7mm Magnums/PRC with 155-160 gr bullets, or the 338-06/338 Win Mag with 210-215 gr bullets.
Obviously, the larger cartridges with heavier bullets will generate more recoil energy, so your recoil tolerance should be a factor in your final choice selection.

As mentioned above, many various cartridge/bullet combinations will work on moose, as most are not shot at the longer distances you are looking at. I have taken moose with cartridges ranginfrom 6.5x55 with 140 gr bullets, up to the 9.3x62 with 250 gr bullets, out to the 220 yards mentioned above.

Choose a rifle on your chosen chambering that fits you well, and practice with it until you are confident in your ability, and the rifle/scope/ammunition combination that suits your hunting style and environment.
Best of luck in your quest

I used factory hornady precision hunter ammo for my first moose this year at 300 yards. It was a 300prc 212gr eld-x getting 277x fps out the muzzle from a 22 inch barreled rifle. The moose took it just behind the left shoulder and turned half the heart and all the lungs to pureè.

The bullet hit a rib on the way in and had no exit...so every shred of energy was dumped into him.

My wife used a 139gr Hornady in her 7wby doing 3375fps and shot it through an elk at 250 yards. Those old interlocks work great. We didn’t have enough bullet left over for a picture. Some of it left the far side but not all

Moose aren't that hard to kill ... we dropped plenty of them in the day (60s/70s) with Grampas old Win 94 in 30 WCF & 12 GA slugs ... we had nothing fancy ... off the shelf factory ammo (whatever was cheapest) ... later on we got the Lee Loader for $9.95 at SIR and reloaded our own 30-30 Win ammo ... they were usually 1-shot kills as I recall ... we often couldn't see more that 50 yds in the thick bush we hunted in ... if it wasn't for my "iffy" eyes I wouldn't hesitate to hunt moose with a 30-30 Win levergun with iron sights today ... in my area of Ontario you could die of old age waiting for a moose validation tag in the lottery (14 points) ... back in the day you could hunt any moose with a $10 license bought over the counter at the local hardware store and take a black bear to boot
