Yes. But take into consideration that you most likely wont be alone in such a situation (hopefully) different types of boomsticks could be an advantage. Same as war ... soldiers didn't all carry the same gun. Diversity is key in some cases. Next to the sks a 12 gauge isn't as usefull ... but it has it's place.
I don't have a VZ .... yet... so I might have to settle.
Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Don't bank on having others in your party being armed and capable(mentally) of doing business. The diversity in arms in the military is a different animal. Their(military) goal is vastly different than that of the surviving citizen. There is no need for Joe citizen to engage everyone they meet or observe. That being said, anything a shotgun can do, a rifle can do better. The vast majority of firearms in society are rifles. A rifle vs rifle conflict is "fair" for the most part. A rifle vs shotgun is a one sided engagement. There's a reason shotguns aren't common place amongst soldiers.

Hey all,
Last thread pretty much crowned the AR. Now, let's try it again with one BIG restraint : Which one do you consider as the ultimate SHTF non-restricted ? My heart goes to the PE-90, but weight might make it somewhat less desirable. Let's hear ya!!
It does in the sense that in the case of a SHTF scenario our dear old Government would immediately seize all the restricted and prohibited firearms they know of, while leaving the subsitance hunters (who use non-restricted firearms, and those who own "antiques" not in the books) relatively alone .... That's me theory anyway.
With an effective range of only 50m+-..I'll pass.
I know a guy who'd tell you different..."Slugs out to 200m"
I always end up![]()
all sucking wind and not thinking. 12ga 23/4 (maybe 3"). almost every farmer has one. meaning ammo is more likely then 308 223 ect. besides can shoot slugs shot or a combo. it isn't as cool as the m16 but were talking worst case. i would love to say i would grab my 45 and 223 (witch i would) but.....remember the peace maker didn't tame the west the shotgun did. you are surviving not engaging and destroying the enemy. you want to avoid conflict.
Well what kind of SHTF are we talking about?
Home invader? Shotgun: Home becomes your fortress, and defensive CQC is where the shotguns reigns king.
Power outage for more then 72 hours / Hurricane katrina / tornado / something else similar? Pistol; concealment is paramount when trying to retrieve survival rations from an urban zone while police and military try to get the situation under control. Keep the shotgun back for home defense.
Roving gangs of armed thieves / rapists / thugs? ....Why the f**k did I stay around long enough for those to become a real problem? Nevertheless, definitely a rifle, either AR15, VZ, or M305, whichever I can grab and load quickest.
Zombies? ...Rifle. Nuff said.
My catch all solution for all the above?
Buy at least one of each.
What kind of SHTF are you talking about, a concentrated Russian invasion?
If that's the case, a rifle and I'd build a suppressor to slap onto it and find as many mags to unpin as possible.

SKS hands down. Ride her hard, put her away wet, let her rust, she just doesn't care a keeps right on trucking. Not the most powerful, or accurate rifle in the world, but that thing just refuses to die. Second choice would be a Remington 870 in 12ga, eats the world's most versatile ammo can can be reloaded for if you need "custom" ammo for her. 3rd would be an Enfield in whatever flavor floats your boat.
