Best out of the box 22lr under $500

Would you expand on this please?

Cz is having a very hard time selling 455's and has an increase in demand for 452. The market much prefers the 452, according to cz. The 455 are not well received by those who expect high quality accurate 22's from cz. This is coming from cz, not from me. Hope this helps. Sorry I won't drop names so you will have to blindly believe me, or not believe me. Those who know me believe me.

I'm a fan of the ruger 10/22... it is fun, reasonably accurate, a tonne of after market products your nephew can buy to dress it up if he wants to.

Buy a 10/22 and let the kid have some fun. Get the target model if you want accuracy. You're probably only going to shoot it at 50 yds with him anyways and any 10/22 is plenty accurate inside 50.

I also like the older guns, but if you're looking for a new one, get a Savage and keep Canadians working!!!

Sorry Dizzy, I don't beleive you on this. I talk with two dealers and the CZ warranty center regularly. The 455's routinely sell out as soon as they come in. Presently 3-5 month waiting time on the switch barrels also from the warranty center (importer).

Last couple shoots I went to the slightly modded 455's trumped all the 452's present.

-455 has a beefier receiver, widened tang.
_455 has 2 action screws and free floated barrel
-455 can easily have headspace reduced to match setting, no indexing, barrel threads ect ..issues like the 452.
-Fit and finish is way better on 455. Constant Surface Speed on the new CNC equipment has eliminated the skip and tooling marks of the 452.
- 455 is slightly heavier, more meat on the receiver, 20" barrel is a nice compramise for a bit more bullet speed over the longer 452 barrels.
- scope grooves are standard european rimfire size now no more 3/8- 11 mm quandry of the various 452's models
-Striker spring is stronger on the 455 although the last 452's made might have also got this upgrade, the earlier ones didn't.
- Because the bolt goes into a relaxed state when the striker is released, the one lug vs two becomes a mute point. Besides, the double lugged 452 is not lapped from the factory and functions pretty well like a single lug in reality (contact).

I've got 3 452's and 2 455's. Althought the 452's are not a slouch and decent rifles, i would sooner trade one of them away than the 455's that both outshoot all of them. The barrel attachment system is not a pin type system, it is a rock solid setup with 2 6mm grub screws. On a barrel switchout my POI rarely shifts more than a couple cliks on the scope, thats how nicely they refit in the receiver.

You don't have to believe me. Every business has two stories, the real one and one they want customers to believe.

Thats why your version is hard to believe (not that I don't)... what company, that is interested in profit (ALL of them), would openly acknowledge that they upgraded to an INFERIOR product... if you were hanging out with the CEO in a remote log cabin, he "might"... "MIGHT" (wink, wink) suggest you try the 452 before the 455... but even over beers, probably not... and any sales rep, that enjoys his job is not going to slam his own product...

Besides, Nupes provided an excellent subjective assessment of the two firearms.

Back on topic. CZ makes a good product regardless, and in my opinion is very hard to beat at it's price point.

If you are looking purely for accuracy and quality, I would go CZ hands down. Though obviously the 10-22 is a super fun little plinker as well. Can't go wrong with either really...

I believe what he said was that "the market prefers the 452", which is not an admission of an inferior product, but of raw sales numbers comparison. There are certainly a lot of people who would rather stick with the 452, at least for now. It's a proven design, I would not be surprised at all to learn that it continues to outsell the 455.

I don't own a 455 so I will not comment on it either way, but generally when a company tries to "standardize" a platform, it is a cost saving measure, and compromises are made in some areas. I believe that preconception is probably the 455's biggest problem.

re 452 vs 455 sales....go on to rimfirecentral and see what everyone is buying while they are still available. I'm sure once the 452's are no longer available the 455 will do fine.....but while they are still around, folks are buying up the last of the 452's.

It was the above quoted "insider information" we were referring to...
