best out of the box long distance rifle under a grand.

Here are some sample three shot group averages from our Osoyoos BC 2007 shoot at 1000m (1094 yds) along with the equipment used.

Sako Custom .284 Win. 9.52"
Tikka T3 Varmint factory 7mm R. Mag. 10.36"
Stolle Custom 6.5-284 14.81"
Savage 12BVSS factory .243 Win. 12.04"
Remington 700 Custom 30-338 18.30"
Sako TRG factory .308 Win. 11.66"

In 2008 the same shooter with the Tikka Varmint rifle fired a 3 shot group under 2". We have a second shooter in this area with another Tikka in 7mm Rem Mag who averages around 1 MOA at that distance. The groups listed above were the averages of at least 3 groups and some are averages of 10 to 12 different groups. Even light winds and mirage plays hell with group sizes at that distance. Winds during this shoot were gusting from 20 to 30 mph at times.

As you can see these factory Tikkas are hard to beat when fed good handloads pushing 180gr Bergers. If you shop around they are available for around $1,000 or less.

^ Wow, those TRG owners must be kicking themselves in the ass for dishing out like 3x more funds for less accuracy!!!

The only thing I can say about the Tikkas is that the actions are as smooth as butter compared to Savages & Remingtons.

Absolute accuracy does not have to be the only or even the most important reason to own a rifle like a TRG. If you are really into a particular hobby whether long range shooting , or something else it can totally be worth living on ichiban and driving a K car to have the absolutely best quality gear.

However I definitly don't need a rifle capable of 1moa at 1000. Heck I really don't need one at 1 MOA at 100 if I am honest but I do hope to get better.

The Tikkas and Savage seem to hit above their weight but I would guess there are some serious gunsmithing that goes into them?

If you want the best you can get out of the box under 1k you will end up with a Savage. Nothing else beats it for the value. The Tikka is much, much more than the Savage with only a marginal advantage. But with any factory gun some will shoot, others not so much. Savage is easy to spin a competition barrel or other upgrades if you want down the road too.

seems a lot of the time with hunting the best chances pop in front of you inside 150 yards... so pieplate accuracy will work, but it would be nice to be able to reach out and touch something at 1000.... i made the mistake of holding a trg and it fit me like a glove... sadly they are so expensive...
