Best place to get an AR?

I'm in Edmonton, Alberta and would like to get an AR 15. I would prefer to buy locally but have no problems buying online. I just feel that it might be simpler with the STATT and tranporting it home. I've read the AR15.com FAQ about buying your first AR and M4Carbine.net's knowledge based threads but it just feels like too much work to ask each retailer all those technical questions about each of their offerings. So my approach will just to get one from the most popular brands. Larry Vickers says BCM, Colt or Daniel Defense. I hear Noveske and LMT are good too. So I think I'm going to stick to those brands and find the cheapest. I'm looking for maybe 11.5 - 14.5 barrel with a quad rail. I would prefer something that's not so customized so that the price can be kept low. I looked into the stores with the ads here and I'm a little overwhelmed with trying to filter out the offerings. It's hard to compare as a lot of rifles being sold are customized and seems to be the reason they're in the higher price range. I was hoping to get something about $1200. I don't care if it doesn't have sights. I'll buy the flip up sights and optics later. My wife is already freaked out about guns being so expensive. At least I can buy the accessories one at a time and it won't be so expensive or obvious. I just need to find a lower priced AR. I don't want the Norinco. I need a flattop upper.

In edmonton your best bets are:

Phoenix range
P&d
Milarm
Last resort is wholesale sports, but they only have 1 NEA and 1 Wyndham.

That list is ordered by best available selection as well
 
I second wolverine.... They have a 14.5 DDm4 v7 for sale right now. I am in Edmonton as well and hit up all the shops recently when looking for an ar. Wolverine had the best price on 16" V7's
 
With the Norinco M4 selling for $529 at Marstar right now, that's where I would buy...

We have two of these rifles from Marstar, ZERO issues over the last couple years! TONS of fun!

If you can't find what you want at Phoenix, Milarm, P&D, or Wild West then the DD from Wolverine is probably the best option.
$1200 is a little on the low side for a quality AR though, you may want to up your budget to at least $1500. You can get a good AR for around $1200 but a little more goes a long way.

As the others have said the most important part is to go to one of the stores here and get your feelers on some rifles. One very important thing to remember is that the AR is not like other rifles, every single part can be swapped out for at least one alternative.

If you're interested, I can bring my frankengun to the range and let you test it out.

I have a frankengun AR that has prob seen more abuse than 99% of AR's and it runs perfectly. It is one I use for testing and has been overheated and overstressed to the point I was actually expecting it to fail and fail spectacularly but it keeps on going. It also hardly ever gets cleaned.

I just realized that too.. thanks.. I will have to do more research on the reliability and durability of the Norinco..

I just called Phoenix and right now, in terms of brands that I've mentioned that I am considering, they only have Colt. P&D doesn't have any of the brands I mentioned, I just checked their inventory. I don't like how they require a gun range membership before they will sell you a restricted. AFAIK, that isn't in the law. They should leave that BS with the CFOs. There were a couple other things that didn't sit right with me in principle with some of the things they said in their FAQ, can't remember off the top of my head but it felt like they were gun control sympathisers..I have yet to call or go down to Milarm to check out their inventory.

Thanks for the reminder, I did see quite a bit the last time I was there. I almost crossed them off my mind because I feel that they're a joke as a range. As a dealer of firearms, quite possibly a different story. I don't like shooting there because it's so commercialized (which is good to get people into the sport) and one R.O. was such a goof he complimented me with my shot groups and said that "You must either play lots of video games or have surgical hands" Wuuut??? Video games result in good shot groups? lol
