Best place to get an AR?

If your not against travelling to red deer, the red deer shooting center has a large selection of knights, DD, noveske, vltor and I believe there was some Troy & NEA stuff. I just bought parts to make an afghan upper and going back to do a diplomat upper. Has .223 and 300blkout gear. Try out their top notch facility while your there. By far the nicest & spacious indoor range I've been to.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do they have a website?

CFO will not approve the sales transfer without a range membership.
The man to talk to at P&D is Scott. He is by far and wide the most knowledgeable person they have on staff. He also runs the Service Rifle & Pistol leage at CHAS. He's at the monthly meetings. You can find him there every day they're open except thursday.

I was there today, and they carry Remington, DPMS, Bushmaster and I think I saw a Nork there too.

Yeah I emailed them about it and got that explanation. It surprises me. I thought that we're the best province for guns and yet we have this BS. I thought that this BS was relegated to Bantario. I've even read threads where people stated they were able to buy restricted in Ontario without a range membership. I thought I read in a thread before where it was stated that it wasn't required here in Alberta. Is this something new?

Not entirely true.
You can join the shooters guild and then you don't need a range membership, you get your LTATT then you can then go anywhere they allow you to buy a day-pass or anywhere that you can go as a guest. I know Phoenix in Edmonton sells them and I heard someone at P&D talking about it the last time I was there.

Yeah I'm aware of the Shooter's Guild, I took my PAL/RPAL courses at Phoenix. I already have a CHAS membership too so it doesn't matter. I just don't like this BS requirement from the CFO. Yeah, I can't legally discharge a restricted aside from a gun range but why make it a requirement for purchasing a restricted. Purchasing does not equate to actually shooting the thing. I know I know, nothing makes sense. I'm just venting.

You don't have to be a range member to buy restricted, I bought many restricted firearms before joining my range, obviously once you get them home you can't remove them from your house, but you can for sure purchase them without a range membership. I am in Ontario

We're talking about Alberta specifically...

So I placed an order for the CQA from Marstar. I sent them an email today and John replied in a few hours. I didn't expect a reply today as it's a Saturday so I was pretty impressed. I was even more impressed that they try to make the process as painless as possible. Since I initially told the wife that I want to get an AR before the RCMP moves it to prohib. and that they were in the range of $1200 to $3500, and I actually got a $530 AR, I decided to throw a Norinco 1911 there as well. lol My dad had Norinco a few years ago and it never had problems. I don't expect to have issues with this one. Thanks for all the help everyone! I'm amazed how helpful people are in this forum, unlike other forums I've joined where it seems that older members just like to aggravate new members. I didn't apply for my RPAL for a few years since I was daunted with the process and due to money concerns but looking back, having taken the advice from the sticky, it has been a pretty painless process and in a few days to a couple weeks, I will be in possession of an AR and a 1911. Woohoo!!!

I don't like how they require a gun range membership before they will sell you a restricted. AFAIK, that isn't in the law.
Everywhere I've bought a restricted has asked for a membership and my city of birth. The CFO asks for it when they initiate the transfer.

Also, congrats on the norc. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I've shot one before and for the price, you can't beat it.

I just received one of the $529 "Polytech" deals and all I can say is the quality of this thing is truly offensive to the AR15 platform.
Pretty much everything is cast, receiver alloy is lighter then any other AR I have in the stable...possibly recycled pop cans. It was "wire wheel" finished before anodizing....at least the spots that were finished and not left cast. Upper and lower wiggle like a MF. Stock is solid....and by that I mean it will barely move, stuck to the buffer tube like it's glued. Rear sight on the detach handle will not move for elevation, the housing if jammed on it crooked as #### and mashed into the handle ears. FSB, barrel, flash hider and crush washer all parked together as a unit. Flash hider has 4 ports, not 5 and is crooked as ####. FSB which is parked, has black touch up paint on it...wtf? Came with 2 mags, both painted.. even the plastic followers were painted black. Top rail also has the nice wire wheel finish prior to anodizing.
3 things I can say are good....bolt and carrier look OK, chromed on the interior of the carrier, bolt and carrier are tight, not much slop....finish is horrendous however inside and out.
Barrel is well chromed and the bore looks good, exterior also horrendous.
Buffer weighed exactly 3oz....yippie.
It's all in pieces right now until I can figure out what to do with it. Initially I was going to just keep the lower and the stripped upper to replace a POS NEA stripped upper I bought, but this makes NEA look like KAC...well maybe not that good....but #### this thing does not inspire even an ounce of confidence.
I don't want to be a ####, but I can't understand how anyone could be happy with this, or even recommend them to other people. #### it may work just fine, I'm not even knocking the function....its just sooo ####ily put together and finished I'm actually afraid to shoot it. The AR is a finely tuned precision firearm....this thing is not. My first AR was scraped together on a Dlask lower and DPMS complete parts kit, and THAT was what I thought was bottom of the barrel at the time. That cost me $800 total over 10 years ago, but it's 10 times higher quality then this $529 special.
#### I even had a CQ311 and despite the painted finish, was all milled and quite a solid gun...shot real well too, and it was $500 about 8 years ago. Hard to believe that Chinese quality could get worse but here we are....
I really gotta quit reading the reviews on here...I've bought nothing but junk in the last 6 months because of all the praise and "positive reviews". Nork 1911 that is just dog####, NEA upper that is all out of spec and ####ed up that I had to fit a new dust cover to it, NEA BCG that blew up on the 3rd round I fired through it, and now this CQA piece of ####....
I swear before you all, I will never EVER buy another piece of Chinese firearm ####, or NEA garbage ever again!!
And I can only assume that every positive review is due to that person only owning that one gun and nothing else to compare it to.... .:)

I'm such a noob that I can't really appreciate all that you're saying here. When I receive it, I will come back to your post and do some research to be able to follow what you're talking about here, and the implications. I am prepared to see a rugged finish, it doesn't matter to me for a $529 first AR. I've handled (not fired, just field stripping) old beat up M16s while in ROTC in college and I still loved them. As long as it fires and keeps firing reliably, I will be happy with this purchase. The positive reviews on this board and positive videos on Youtube, include Rod Giltaca's, sure did help sway me to buy this firearm. However, it was more about it being very affordable and the reassurance (from the positive reviews) that it was reliable that made me decide to go for it. My dad did have a Norinco 1911 that was super reliable which also reinforced my confidence that this AR will be reliable. When I have more funds, I will probably get a DD or similar but for now, this should do.
