Best "price point" for a hunting scope

I have a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 and find its the most finicky scope I own, very slight movement and your out of the scope. Your cheek weld has to be 100% in the same spot with not a hair difference or the scope has those big black edges. I believe this is called a very poor "eye box". I find the resale sucks on these so I resorted to putting it on my sons .22 LR. I did like the Viper PST 2.5-10x32 I owned but would never buy a Vortex product below that again.

They don't match up precisely with your listed price groups, but here's my opinion. For a cheaper scope a 3000 series Bushnell or a vx1 or vx2 Leupold. Mid price, Bushnell 4000 series, nikon monarch 3, leupold vx3, zeiss terra, cabelas euro. High end $1000 plus I'd take the Swarovski Z3. Most of my rifles wear a Busnell 4200. The Cabelas Euro is a great value, and really great glass made by Meopta(apparently they used to make the Zeiss Conquest). And the one I dream of at night, the Swarovski, is so clear and bright, right to the edges. Got to sell some stuff and buy one... Oh, they are light and compact too.

PS just a heads up, Bushnell 6500's get very mixed reviews, unlike the 4000 and 3000 series which are generally well regarded...

For an all round scope that might be used in the woods occasionally, a 2-7 variable is pretty hard to beat IMO. On the top end 4 or 6 power is plenty magnification for deer sized targets well past 400 yds.
Leupold VX2 and VX3, Nikon Monarch, Bushnell 4000. P&D has some Leupolds on sale. WSS usually has a scope sale this time of year as well.

I thought I liked my Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10 x40 until I went hunting with a buddy who had a Zeiss Terra 3-9x40.
10 minutes after it was too dark for me to see past 50 yards in the scope I could still clearly see down to the tree line 150yds away.
You get what you pay for when it comes to optics. I'll personally never buy another bushnell. My next scope will likely be a mid range Swaro or Zeiss.
