Best pump action rifle, any reccomendations?

I have a taipan x, and wish i had a Renegade instead. I rarely if ever use the pump handle, the Renegade has that way cooler look imo,
The time and effort to sell and switch isn't worth it to me though, the taipan has never let me down.

It won't be new or state of the art and considered junk by all the up to date crowd but a good used 760/7600 Remington should scratch your itch. I have seen lots of them on deer and moose hunts in 30-06 and .308 and they always seemed to work well, rain snow or shine, And most had wood furniture so they even looked good in the days before plastics.
Thanks for the recommendation, I was not really aware of these rifles. The 7615 looks like a solid choice but I can't seem to find any for sale.

So...I have a Taipan X (Evo is not out in Canada yet as far as I can tell)and I will say a few things with regards to the X...

1. With the exception of the cross-bolt "latch" at present, the rest of the gun is pretty good, feel-wise. Safety selector, mag release all have AR type of controls.

2. The pump is more of a novelty - for my body/frame, the pump mechanism seems a bit far for me so I have to unnaturally stretch to get at it.

3. After a while, it seems like the rifle's weight starts affecting my hold.

4. When #3 happens and I start on a bench and use a rest, the pump mechanism can interfere with the rest if it is too close to it. I actually am considering removing the pump plates, so it is straight pull from the charging handle only since I can't shorten my distance to the pump mechanism.

5. Not having a lock on the pump is annoying. Inadvertent (albeit) movements in grabbing the pump occasionally take the gun out of battery. I wish it would just lock in place and unlock on firing or manual latch / release operation.

6. PMAG Gen 2s mags would not seat properly without shaving some bits off one part of the spine (it's in another thread and a CGNer found the solution and it works great).

7. Need tools to take it apart (2-3 different sizes). Not too difficult but can be time consuming.

For a range gun, those quirks may be acceptable. For anyone contemplating this as a reliable HD gun, keep looking...

I did write a blurb on my experience with the Taipan X. Initially I had feeding issues but with use, and lube, those have more or less gone by the wayside.

As for MRA Renegade - I sold mine years ago - just did not like the straight pull operation, but back then I had semi-autos to use - I may consider rebuying an MK2, but not at current prices ($1500) though the Taipan X is not that far behind.

Absolutely will get an Evo, but I haven't heard anything definitive when they will be coming into Canada.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown. I got pretty long arms so maybe less of an ergonomic issue for me, but maybe I should try and get a hold of one and shoulder/cycle it before buying.

I removed the default 2 spacers that came installed and pumping is a bit better now, but that is in the comforts of my own home...

Also Fox Operator makes a couple stock adapters for the taipans if you're not aware. If you got some extra stocks lying around it could make it more comfortable for you.

I’ve owned a Troy PAR for a number of years and it is my dedicated truck/coyote rifle. It’s quite accurate and I have had no issues at all. Feeds and ejects everything that I have put into it.
Have you tried steel case? I know they recommend against it but I have seen a single video review where they said there weren't any extraction issues in their hands.

The troy par is great. They have been around forever and not a Canadian/Australian cope rifle. If you ask me they are ridiculously overpriced. They should be cheaper than a Troy ar15, considering there is no gas system.

The crusader lever looks like a terrible rifle and I think the taipan would annoy me but I have no experience with either.

I have handled a Henry supreme and I think I’ll probably buy one.

If you want to scratch the ar itch, you could always get a backland hunter and make sure to get plenty of fun out of it before it gets banned.

Remington used to make the 7615. It’s a real shame they discontinued them.

You may not have seen NS announcement, but Tenda should be stocking and have availability in a few days.
NOOOOOOOO!!! I spent my remaining pre-wedding gun budget on something else...arrgh...gotta find something to sell now....maybe even the recently acquired Taipan X, which I quite enjoy...

Thanks for the heads up. I will check NS forum in case they announced what the pricing will be...

Not that Reddit is any reliable arbiter of facts, but someone said that the Taipan Evo is set to be priced around $1800. That is insane. Right now Tenda has all their Taipan Xs on sale for $1439 plus tax. That, even as a sale price is cheap. I can't imagine I would put down 2000 smackers, tax in, for an Evo. IS the different stock and bolt release worth the extra $400? I dunno... I realize it won't be cheaper than the X, but that's quite a mark up model-wise

That is insane. In your experience is the X trigger all that bad?

Holy crap, guess they have to pay for those injection molding machines one way or another. It seems a bit high considering the plastic parts now... I am waiting to see if they will send the .300 BLK version here or not..

Honestly it seems like that's the way the world is going. I paid over $2000 for my new DP12, and this thing gives the GSG-16 a run for its money insofar as plastic fantastic.

That said, the plastic handguard saved me today - I decided to re-mount my flashlight orientation and realized I had stripped not one, but both left and right middle screws that held the plastic handguard/forend in place. Of all the screws to strip it had to be the middle one (there were front top, three front bottom, a middle on each side and two other ones closer to the back). If that handguard was not plastic, I wouldn't have been able to bend it backwards a bit (despite bleeding/cut hands now). All because Standard Manufacturing decided to use MOE handrails on their Gen 2 (new for 2025/2026) model instead of MLOK.

The Taipan X has plastic, to be sure, but some metal/aluminum. Polymer in guns seems to be much more prevalent than in times past.

Someone needs to import these!

I love this idea!.....:)

However, when Natalie, Wendy, Gary, and China-Con-Carney see this spring-assisted pump action modern sporting rifle, there will be a Liberal Gun Banning Orgy Party........:(

It's black, and they hates blacks as Liberals are genuinely racist bastards!......:(

Liberals ban firearms on how they look!.....:(

Trudy-Socks would be describing this rifle as an "Assault Style Weapon of War". Even though we all no there is no such a thing as an assault rifle.

Liberals are both mentally ill, and extremely cagey and evil. As long as they continue to spew their key trigger words like "assault rifle", "public safety", "think of the children", the Liberal followers will eat this crap up like it's candy.......:(

And in addition, The CBC Slaves, will spew the corrupt ideology regardless of how ridiculous it sounds....:( Liberal followers do not think their masters lie, and CBC certainly wouldn't lie to Canadians, right?......:(

I sold my BCL Siberian, my Ruger Mini 14, and my Ruger mini 30, many years ago. I needed the money for tires, vehicle repairs, and in some cases for other guns I wanted. I miss the two Rugger Models the most......:(:ROFLMAO::love::LOL:

Now I would like to replace one of them with something that is accurate enough for predator hunting, and fun to shoot, and won't be banned a few months after purchasing.....:)

This pump action 223/556 might fit the bill? However I also like the Akdas Alcor 223 wood/blued modern semi-auto hunting rifle as well........:)

I totally understand the tyrannical Liberals are going to eventually ban all civilian firearms ownership.......:(

My question is when? And when the ball does drop, are there any Canadians out there that will have the balls and guts to just say no, and fight back?

Just measured: Pull weight is about the same on my Taipan X as my Troy PAR.
Close to 6½ lbs at the center of the trigger blade, but the straight trigger of the Taipan X does allow a pull by the tip to average around 5 lbs. Trying the same on the Troy PAR's curved trigger gives the same weight, but the shape strongly discourages it in practice.

I've shot staple guns with better triggers.

That being said i wouldn't trade my X for an Evo.
For the added cost or the wacky stock? Man i feel even more undecided then when I posted this thread haha. The renegade looks pretty slick and well built, I just hate having to break grip to cycle the action. We almost need a "push button" action like they have in Aus instead of semis, except one that you could put a piece of tape over the button and it would function as a semi.
