In your learned opinions what is the best pump action shotgun to be had.

Criteria: No BS or frills just a solid smooth feeding machine( that will shot steel and lead. No 3 1/2 inch chamber required) that won't break. Preferably a new one but if one of the older models fits the bill then so be it.

Also, if you know of one that will make me a better shot that would be a plus but I'm afraid no company makes one of those:D

I wish Winchester still made them and hopefully next year when the Montreal Police clears house again, my club will get some more Winchester 1300 Defenders.

Mine is great... spent it's life being being scratched and dented while tossed around the trunk of a police car or dash mounted as an ashtray but never fired. Cleaned out all the gunk, oiled the parts and it shoots great.

I second the BPS , stay away from the new Remington's of all sorts Quality control has taken a nose dive.

X2 on the BPS. The Ithaca 37 is nice too. But I think the price of the new ones are way out of line.
If you can find a nice Mod. 31 Rem. Or a Win. Model 12 don't hesitate to buy. Wingmasters and everything else pale in comparison.

Misnomer.. If above post makes me appear "Fuddish" I apologize.

X17 BPS go to the store and play with them all side by side and judge for yourself. BPS is a step above in function and finish.

The best shotgun I have ever owned has been my Fabarm. It has never failed me, or has given me any cause for concern.

Ithaca Model 37.They are not cheap for a new one but they are very well manufactured.Even a new Remington Model 870 Wingmaster another good shotgun is not a cheap shotgun to purchase new any more.

I have owned:
3 or 4 870s
a Savage 77
an Ithica 37
a BPS
2 Norinco HP-9s
1 older Mossberg 500

By far the smoothest and most reliable was the BPS, next was the Norincos, then the 870. I can't say much about the Ithica as I do not remember using it.
