There is a reason the 870 is the most purchased shotgun on the face of the planet..
yeah, its that its been around for over half a century.
a large part of the reputation of the 870 is based on the fond memories of the older generation who had their high quality, indestructible, smooth-action wingmasters with great fit & finish last them several decades. the new 870 express models are not the same gun at all.
another part of it (which spills over into canada via the net) is perpetuated by rednecked american pride that has a knee-jerk disdain for anything not made in america, regardless of the quality or value (see Tikka T3).
that said, the Nova is a strong contender but id hardly recommend it as someones first shotgun. itll cycle anything reliably and is a very weatherproof and durable gun but shotguns are all about
versatility - and thats the Nova's biggest drawback. if you buy a Nova you need to know
exactly what you want because there arent thousands of aftermarket accessories for it, there are no cheap interchangeable barrels, stocks, etc.
for someones first gun id recommend either a mossberg 500 or rem 870. if they get the wrong configuration usually for $100 or a quick trade can set it right.
i like Mossbergs a lot. the aluminum receiver that 870 fans see as a disadvantage has never warped, bent, rusted or failed me in any way. in fact it is lighter than the 870, and completely rust resistant. either of these two guns are proven designs, reliable, and have parts and accessories available in just about every gun store on earth.
