Best rail for cz858/vz58

Well as much as u may disagree with it..... It's the way the Soviet Union had designed most of their rifles to be optic mounted. Considering they utilised the system for many decades, they obviously thought it worked quite well. And many users of the combloc firearms still think so to this day. Like u said, it may still work great, but on a Combloc gun, a handguard mount will always be a retrofit compared to an integrated side mount.

Agreed, works great for magnified optics but you also didn't see a lot of Aimpoints in the 50's.

I know what your saying about the ball/spring/pin setup.
I replaced the assembly with a metric allen key socket and nylon lock nut. Got a dozen of each for $5 at the local fastener store (Home Depot did not have).
I still like the NEA front rail the best...light weight and mounts optic low.
I tried the BC Tactical unit. It was solid but bulky for my needs, and not as light as the NEA.

Brilliant! I am going to have to buy some as well.

Its as much a retrofit as a FF rail on the AR15 is a retrofit... Please direct me to these "many users" in the Czech or Slovak army who have been fighting in Afghanistan with the VZ58 for the past 15 years who think this. You would be hard pressed to find many in theatre with a side mount but almost ALL use a handguard mount. Both have there place but a retrofit that is an improvement it just an improvement IMHO... ;)
