best rifle for under 2500

Hey guys, im just a normal dude who loves my boom sticks. Ive been shootin my big bore 45-70 at the range, have not got out on any hunts yet in northern ontario so just been having fun with my boom stick at the range. Have all other sorts of firearms, just wanted to get into the long range side of things a little more without having to walk up 5 rifles and learn the expensive rookie mistakes before finding the one. Im just asking because if im going to spend a good chunk of money, i might as well see what my CGN experienced buddies are shooting. Anyway, i appreciate everyones efforts and time, believe me with two kids under 3 I know how valuable time is, not to mention hobbies! I take it Sako is higher end right out of the box, if you've got the coin, and tikka and savage are at about the same level. One thing I have read about the 700XCR though is that the frame will actually flex and in some instances, rub on the "free floating" barrel. An XCR and A7 are priced the same for intro to the market, and you get a scope with the A7, not the greatest but something extra thrown in. Ive heard of these dreaded savage/rem debates and I did not want to go there, just want some opinions of tried and tested, results oriented selections, even if I have to spend that little extra to get me there. At least if you make the jump up by a few more hundred you can walk away with something you can stick with for years and years.

For out-of-the-box accuracy my first choice would be single shot Cooper, second choice a TC Icon Precision Hunter ( check factory test targets & choose one that shot under 1/2").

Save your money till you've put in the research time to determine for yourself what you think you will enjoy. Advice around on a forum is generally worth what you pay for it.

LOL...@ ultimate monkey...well I know alot of guys that hunt with "precision rifles", and there for look in the precision forum to find them, I'm one of them. So this isnt really a fact at all, that hes looking for a target rifle! Like I said earlier, I was just playing the devils advocate, and was interested in more details to what he would like to do with the rifle, which would give me and others guys that wanted to comment, a better understanding of what he wanted to accomplish. And if he is looking for a target rifle, for those of us that shoot target rifles, we know that there are several different disciplines, and each of them have speciific requirments for the rifle. I.E. mag fed, single shot, no muzzle breaks, weight restrictions, open class, service rifle class, stock class, etc...sorry Monkey, for the few of us that did comment, including myself that didnt see the "simple facts" that you did.

Hey anmckenn! thats a big boom stick! (45-70) A buddy of mine shoots it, and its a great rifle! Having raised two kids myself, I understand time is money, and money is tight! I would suggest that you get hold of a few guys here that can make you a custom rifle. Its seems that most guys that are crazy about accuracy and consistency, end up going that route. Everything can be fine tuned at this end of buying rifles and with that kind of cash, you should be able to get a decent custom rifle. Its something to think about.

Really..? you have 2500 for the rifle alone, and you cant be bothered to do some research in what you want. Mabey precision shooting isn't for you.
Mabey you should just walk into the nearest wholesale sports and let them sell you there most" tactical " most over priced rifle and you can go home happy.

lol...or "someone" here will set him up with a stiller 338 rem, pierce...for 3200 bucks!!

Without optics, so sako is better than rem and sav?

It's just bad grammar to use the word Sako in the same sentence as the other two. I've had all of the above in multiples at one time or another and there is no question that Sako is the top dog. Thier factory barrels are as good as a Krieger, the lock time is better than a remmy. The scope mount is bullet proof and the trigger does not require an upgrade. I must admit that I do like to weld my Sako optilock rings to the scope base though.

You could go into any FTR match with a factory Sako varminter and shoot as well as anybody there.

Anyone who would dispute the above has never owned and shot a Sako.

I personnaly shot six twenty round groups over a two day period at 300 yards with my Sako 223 in an ISU match. My score was 117 V-Bulls in a row out of 120 shots on score. FYI the 300 yard V-bull was 2.5 inches in diameter at the time. That score can be easily verified if you dont believe it.

Thanks for your time boys, i have been doing alot of research but am also not rushing into anything, was hoping to pull a scope out of that btw. I got plenty of toys to keep me grinning for now, ive just had that itch more and more to get into serious long range shooting, it just seems like loads of fun not to mention challenging. Thanks fore the comments anyhow. Happy shooting
