Best round for Coyote

204 Ruger, with 35 grain Berger's is my cartridge and bullet of choice as well. I have used most cartridges from 22lr to 300 RUM for coyotes. Those 35 grain Berger's just perfectly perform, especially at or just over 4000fps. The 40 grain Berger bullets are better for the long range shots, and my second choice of bullet would be the 39 grain Speer TNT, instead of the Sierra.
Yes, those 35's are pretty much a perfect round for fur, and they'll anchor them quickly too. People sleep on the 204, although if a guy doesn't reload you won't get the best bullets for coyotes (in my opinion).

I haven't tried the 39 TNT's yet, but I do have a box waiting for load development. I may need to pick your brain as to a load, and why you prefer them over the BK's. Those Sierra's shoot tight groups so I'm wary to give them up

Main reason for second choice was just because they perform well, super explosive round, and extremely cheap.

I currently have enough 35 grain berger bullets to last me a lifetime of shooting in my 204. Got them when wholesale sports was closing, for pennies on the dollar.

Where are you at? I’ve had extreme good luck with snares, need a trapper licence and the instructions included. They work 24/7 but you must keep dogs from running fields and bush.

Hey all, I bought some land recently and there is a massive population of coyotes around that I would like to harvest from. Wondering what the best round/rifle would be to effectively reduce their numbers and bring in some furs while I’m at it.
I have a 6.5x55 Swedish, a .270 and a .22 but might consider getting a .223 or .22 mag for the purpose if I can find one priced right.
Congrats on your purchase! Anything will work within the right limits. If your looking for a more dedicated yote rifle 222 or 223 or 22-250 with work great as a middle ground between what you already have. 22 mag doesn't gain you enough over the 22 you already have IMO. 223 is a pretty easy choice just for ammo price/selection/availability.

223 has always worked for me although I have shot coyotes with many other calibers the only one left in my stable is a CZ 527 - 223 with a 1:9 twist barrel, shoots anything from 52gr HPBT to 69gr HPBT into tiny little bug holes, topped with an arken EPL4 - 4-16 x 50mm scope, it just works

Another vote for .223 - The coyotes I’ve taken out around our farm haven’t complained yet! Tikka T3X scoped with a Swarovski Z3 has been great for the 200 yard shots out to our back paddocks I’ve taken. Bought an electronic caller as well, but haven’t had to use it yet.

What did you get for a caller?

Nothing fancy! Picked up the basic FoxPro Prowler as my starter setup from Cabela’s. Haven’t needed it in the field yet, so all I can say about it so far is my golden retriever is fascinated by the sounds it makes, haha.
Fox pro has a podcast you can listen to for some tips. I just have a Primos Dogg Caller and Crazy Critter decoy. Not the best but inexpensive

All the above mentioned calibers I've used but when the distances approach 500 yards and you’re dealing with a brisk crosswind is when the .243Win, 6.5CM and the 25/06 pull away from the crowd.

….ballistic charts aside put up a 24 inch wide cardboard box at 500 yards and test out your 22 centre fires in a 20mph cross wind and shoot 3 rounds holding centre. You will be shocked by how much you missed that box by where the impacts were indicated by the streaks in the snow.

Ive been using a Foxpro Fury for the past 10 plus years but sending it in for a ‘repair’ as its starting to act up once in a while having been dropped and the speaker being held in place with hot glue. It will become my backup caller as Ive just ordered a Foxpro X24. The coyotes and CROWS are going to get a spanking !!

The 95 gr Vmax option for your 6.5x55SE will of course absolutely flatten coyotes but it is unlikely to be fur friendly if that is a concern.
Also the speer 90 gr tnt loaded for your 6.5 is a great bullet, accurate and economical. If noise could be an issue then 223 or smaller could be the way to go

I currently use a 25-06 with 75gr V-Max, and it absolutely flattens them.
Found my old 223 was too heavy and ran out of steam for the long shots.
The sako finnlite works fantastic and we have wolves and yes a 223 still works well, I just like my 25-06 better.
75gr at 3600 puts the hurt on them

35gr Bergers or 39Gr SBK’s were my go to in my Tikka T3 .204R
