Best scope for this rifle?

I'd appreciate your suggestions on a scope for my "new" rifle, a 308 22" heavy barrelled sako (aII). It is intended mainly for hunting but for some target shooting, but primarily hunting (deer, elk and the occasional head off a grouse). The rifle weighs about 8 lbs. bare. About me: I like carrying a heavy rifle when I stillhunt and I am somewhat of a stock crawler.
The rifle was sighted with a nightforce 6 x scope and handloads to yield 1/4" groups at 100 yards. I am thinking a variable power scope with 4 as lower limit and don't mind spending a few $. without going crazy. Has anyone tried the illuminated swarov? My .243 wears a Khales, and the .257 mkv has a lower end swarv that I bought used and both are nice. Never tried a nikon or lecia. I'm 57 and like brightness in low light conditions is important.

S&B makes 1 for that rifle that will put a grin from ear to ear but it will also replace your wallet with a nice sized whole ;)
& yes that goes for Swaro's 2 also I would look a Darvi's from Ziess also.
 
If you are happy with swaro stick with them. Everyones eyes are different and guys that like swaro tend not to like zeiss or leica. Just the ways eyes work I guess as I can't figure out what else would cause the dislikes as all are great optics. For low light and brightness swaro is very hard to beat, in fact almost impossible to beat unless you move up to s&b. Nice rifle
 
There is a very nice looking S & B classic which is 3 x 12 x 42 illiuminated available for $1600.00 but there would go my year -end bonus and it is more than I paid for the rifle. I am tempted, though..

Hey Joey, have you looked through a Leupold VX-3? Not the older VX-III. The more recent (2009) released VX-3 comes with their extended twilight system, which includes a new type of coating and internal gas to maximize low light transmission. It's a very nice scope and might be more in the price range you're looking for.
 
Remember that optics are an accessory and they don't need to stay with the rifle
should you choose to sell it.
Spend what you can on this part.
Consider it an investment.
Yours and the enjoyment you will get from it.
Just a thought.
And I think a Banner would deserved to put on a rimfire.

I have a banner on my yote rifle.... it is very accurate and holds a good zero but it is very poor in low light....

On my whitetail rig I have a Redfield revolution 3-9 x 50 and just love it..... for a bit over 200 bucks it is an amazingly well made scope.... If you decide to look at the Redfields though you may want to lean towards a 3-9 x 40 so you waon't have to mount it too high on your sako....
 
The OP has NF ,Khales and Swaro,I would put a Banner in the garbage.
1) Ziess Victory FL Over $2500
2) Swaro Z-5 or Z6 $1500-$3000
3) S&B Summit About $1500
4) Ziess conquest $800-$1200
Sticking with NF is never a bad decision..you need to find out you want for weight, 30mm vs 1" and FFP and SFP.

I am sticking with Zeiss..rapid Z seems to make sense to me.
 
If he's looking at getting a S&B or Swaro, I really doubt he wants to know about Bushnell banners or Redfields. Like comparing apples and oranges or Porsche and Hyundai should I say! ;)

I saw his other posts before saying anything. Wanted to know the jest of his comments. Doesn't appear to be the nicest chap on the boards.

That said, I have an old low power Bushnell variable that is surprisingly bright and stable. (made in Japan I believe)

However if you are talking about new scopes, then something a wee bit better than a Banner might be in order. But optically, the mid range scopes are much better than they used to be, and in a HUNTING situation, the differences are far less obvious.

I am in a similar position, trying to scope a couple of rifles, and it seems it is becoming much more difficult to select a good scope. There are lots of great choices out there, just settling on one is the problem.
