Best short 12 gauge pump?

There is nothing wrong with the Norinco HP9-1 14" 870 clones. They are very reliable, especially in terms of feed and extraction, they don't rust badly on the receiver or barrel and 100% of 870 parts work on them without gunsmithing.

And they are cheap.

Their only negative is that they are heavy.

My bush camp gun.

I'll put in another good word for the Ithaca 37. I had the barrel on mine shortened to 22" and sights fitted for use as a slug gun. Overall length ( with a 14 1/2" pull) is 41 1/2 inches. Shortening it to 18 1/2" should put you at 38 1/2" o.a.l. My Win 94 has a length of pull of just a hair over 13", so that should be taken into account when making comparisons.

The Ithaca is a very light package, I think mine is 6 1/2 lbs., and I find it a lot slicker to operate than the 870. Less prone to short-shucking, which I have a bad habit of.

Different deal.. But my nephews who have young kids and have other guns/shotguns like the chinese mag guns.
For camp defence both 2 and 4 legged. quick to load and get rolling and the guns are only loaded when needed
And of course they are heavier but more time at the gym and less on CGN might work.:)

Have one of those turkish 'Canuck' pumps with the 14" bbl.
Haven't had a partridge complain yet as it fell to the ground dead.
Got it for less than $200.
Has 3 interchangeable chokes.

Keep it simple.
Rem 870 Wingmaster
12.5” barrel
Hogue stock
Scattergun sights
31” overall
Sub $500 to build.

If they come from a licensed manufacturer pre-built with a short barrel (< 18") they're legal and non-restricted.
I don't know what the legal status is if you build a short barrel shottie yourself??????
Especially if the receiver came from a long barreled shotgun.

summary:
If a factory-produced shotgun has a barrel less than 18 inches, it’s legal so long as its overall length is greater than 660mm, or 30 inches, and the action is hand-operated, like a pump-action.

I'm partial to my Dominion Arms Grizzly (870 clone with a short barrel), but even just day hiking and camping they're a bit heavy for their size.

You could also look into the Benelli Super Nova Tactical. You can get them with a 14 inch barrel. Quite a jump up in price compared to the Norinco 870 clones however. I guess it depends if the "It's for work" clause expands or shrinks your budget :d

Get a 870 with a short barrel with sights on it and be done with it . made sure you replace the crappy mag follower with a solid one . I can see using a 3030 against but Grizzly ? wow . I'd prefer a 12 gauge pump . the Mossberg 500 will work also. but I prefer the 870. and use it for a while to test it out .
