I am planning to buy a new 12G pump action shotgun that I want to use on deer, bears and birds. I have a limited budget of $500

I have narrowed my choices to the following based on Frontier Taxidermy prices:

1) Mossberg 500 Combo Field/Deer Barrel - $369

2) Weatherby PA-08 pump(3 choke tubes) - $439

3) Rem. 870 express - $449

Any advice on quality of these guns or suggestions on not listed guns is appreciated.

Regards

I've no experience with weatherbies but of the three I'd go with the 870. A time proven, reliable design, OEM and aftermarket parts abound.
Mossberg is OK but I've seen some recent tests where they didn't do so well.

I've got Winchester and Remington pump shotguns in the gun locker, and now have a Mossberg on order. As many times as people have told me that I'll never have problems with and can't go wrong with the 870, my gun begs to differ. I've heard lots of good things on the Mossberg 500, so that's where my money is going. I hate unreliable guns!!

I'd have to say the 870. Although you get 2 barrels with the 500 that is mossbergs cheapest shotgun. It will look and feel a lot "cheaper" then the 870 and almost guaranteeded not to last as long either. I own an 870 and mossberg 535 and the 870 is nicer, if I could only have one it would be the 870.

Norinco HP9-1
Presently sold out (but), I'd suggest looking - or waiting - for one of these.

I sold my 870 and bought a second Mossberg 500 for my wife. The 870 isn't a horrible gun, just not quite as smooth as the 500. The biggest thing for me is the bolt release in front of the trigger guard. I hated that.

if you want to go for deer you might want to go with the Mossberg. the cheaper price will let you buy a slug barrell for it and still be under budget. quality wise i think the Mossberg and the 870 Express is about the same. the 870 is more popular, but thats because its made here in north america.

i have a 870 and my hunting buddy has a 500... both are fine shotguns... but this summer/fall when my new Mossberg 930 Waterfowl comes out it will put his 500 to shame hahaha

Mossberg for the price, 2 barrels. Especially if the deer barrel is rifled and sighted or even better cantilever. Owned 2 no complaints.

Mossberg is every bit as good as Remington maybe eve better. :nest:

go with the 870. there's probably a reason why they are the most common shotgun issued to any north american fighting force

you can get that weatherby from gobles.ca for around 335 they probably ship. however no reviews on it.

out of those id get the 870, however the p-350 from stoeger is a great gun that hasnt failed me. I paid 365 for it,5 chokes ,full camo
