Best shotgun for $500 (taxes in)

I was given a used 2 3/4'' 870 and literally put tens of thousands of rounds through it. #1's, #2's, #7 1/2's and slugs. I also had it "expanded" to accomodate 3'' shells with the only stoppage ever occuring after the expansion due to the spring not being strong enough to lift up the heavier rounds. The stock has been replaced a couple of times and it gets cleaned evry couple of hunts. The gun is reliable and as accurate as can be asked for. 870 will work all day every day with minimal maintenance, and work just as well the next day. You cant expect to have an 870 plus a rifled barrel for $500 though. You will have to buy the extra barrel separate.

I own an 870 3 1/2" model and it has treated me very well!
I wouldn't recommend the 3 1/2" model though, the extra 1/2" isn't worth the B/S!

I've got friends that own mossbergs and haven't heard any terrible complaints either!

but I hear that the 870s are made in North America and in this economy it's nice to keep the coin closer to home!

Shouldering a gun at your local gun shop can be one of the best tools in giving you a final decision!!!

Best of luck this season!
