Best shotgun for $500 (taxes in)

If you watch the EE religiously for a couple weeks you can really score well. I bought a brand new Wingmaster last year for $500 or $550. Such a smokin deal. If you are ready to jump on it you can do much better than your 3 options.

If new is you're game the express is the ticket.

Mossberg M590A1 20"............................................................ $ 599.00
Remington 870 Express (7-shot synthetic)................................. $ 350.00

If you want tactical go with the Mossberg, if you want practical, get the 870.

why not price the new remington 887. sort of like the nova IMO. I am sure you can get few barrels for the 870 for that price. I thought the 870 offered a package deal.

Norinco HP9-1
Presently sold out (but), I'd suggest looking - or waiting - for one of these.

There sold out from there, but there are many other places that have them in stock. PM if interested where. Out of the 3 mentioned, I would choose the Wheatherby, they are very solid and priced to sell.

Find an older 870 wingmaster and make your changes. Better slide rails smoother and far better finished surfaces. See lots for sale around $3-4 hundred mark!

If you want to buy new and not mess with it, get the Mossberg (500). It tends to be smoother and cycle easier right out of the box in my experience. If you want a nicer gun, get a used Wingmaster Rem with a full choke, and have it tapped for thinwall chokes; then you have versatility in a better quality gun for the same price. Personally, I'd go the second route, but with an Ihaca, which I feel is a better gun yet. Just my .2 cents.

870 is the way to go -- I have two, a new one and a 20 year old and they are both smooth as silk and the old one has never missed a beat in 20 years of hunting or trap shooting.

pump shotgun

the 870 has a steel receiver and the mossberg is aluminum. they are both reliable shotguns . I like the weight of my 870 over the mossberg 500 . your choice .

870 is a great gun, tough to dissassemble and assemble I find but great none the less and all steel parts, mossberg has some ejection issues, the 870 is the most widely sold for a reason, because its time tested and true.

870 is a great choice for an inexpensive pump. Lots of barrel options and aftermarket support, and I'd never feel bad beating on it a little.

There is no rifled barrel option for the Weatherby and very few people have even seen them, much less tried them.

I'd personally pass on Mossberg but that's just an irrational dislike for them based on the junk they call centerfire rifles.

870 all the way. There is a reason they have been around for ever and that most North American police forces use them. Tough and reliable for hunting and work. There are versions new and used to fit most budgets too.
