My research indicates that FMJ ammo from a 10.5 barreled AR will provide optimum stopping power at a maximum of 10 meters, as the bullet needs between 2500 and 2700 ft/second velocity to do the job.

The best advertised performance in a 10 inch or longer barrel is Speer Gold Dot .223 ammo, which they advertize as being effective to 200 meters.

Federal Fusion ammo is supposed to be nearly identical and is marketed as deer hunting ammo. It is a soft point ammo with the copper case bonded to the core.

I picked up 2 boxes at Wholesale Sports at about $23/box to try it out.

What ammo, available in Canada, do you think will work best in your Short Barreled Rifle, if you needed it for something other than putting holes in paper?

Hornady FPD line of ammo.

depends on caliber. I punched a hole threw 3/8 steel plate at 75 yards with a cheap cup and core bullet out of a 30/06. I would say the best would be a good hunting bullet like a TSX. If your not dealing with armor a barnes varmint grenade out of a .223 would be brutal.

Good hunting ammo is meant for controlled expansion and deep penetration to make a quick clean kill. Military ammo I truthfully have no idea. But I know it's not good enough for us hunters.

No need to get fancy. In a true SHTF scenario, unless you can get away from the general population and live in the wild, most will pass from disease or dehydration.

Buy several crates of AE 62gr-ball and be happy as you'll be able to punch holes in paper while awaiting the big one. ;)

It's basically Hornady V-max (the .223 anyways) and it's pretty much the same price, so why not buy a box or two?

because you can get 2 boxes of american eagle or 3 boxes of mfs for the same price. In his shtf scenario im sure he'd rather opt for quantity.

You mean the scenario where the ammunition sits in a closet for 2 or 3 years because the world doesn't end? Besides, the Hornady ammo is much more accurate.
