Hello Everyone,

I just joined the forum and will be getting my first firearm in the near future :). I have decided on getting an AR style .22 but my question is which one do I get? I have a few requirements/preferences:

1) I do not like the look of the Ruger SR-22, 10/22 conversions, or the Remington 597 VTR. These all have blocky, ugly receivers.

2) Must be non-restriced. I just want to be able to walk into the woods and blast away at cans, steel targets, etc.

3) The rifle must have a flat top. I do not like the "carry handle" (is that what it's called?) that some of these rifles have.

So everyone, what's my best option? I understand that the Mossberg is quite popular, but I believe it has that annoying carry handle. I am completely in love with the Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22, but it's restricted (so lame). I am actually living in the US right now (will be for the next 14 months before moving home to Vancouver) so I might just buy the S&W and sell it before coming home.

Thanks a lot for the help!

If you are in the US and open to selling before you get back to Canada...why limit yourself to what is legal in Canada, I think there are numerous other firearms many of us would love to spend some time with which we can't get here.

Also I'm not sure why you'd not be interested in some of the 10/22 conversions, the Marauder is fantastic looking and has great reviews.

Ruger 10/22 = $240 bucks (even cheaper in the US)
Archangel Marauder stock kit = $220 (I think you can find these in the US for $180)

For $460 bucks or less, you get a .22LR that:

- is non-restricted
- is tactical-looking
- is solid like a rock
- is a proven platform that has been around for 45+ years
- has a flat top rail
- has a full size 25-round magazine

Can't beat that. Check this thread for photos of different builts with this combo :

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't seen the Archangel Marauder stock, looks a lot like what I'm looking for. Just might pick that one up.

Edit: One more question, is the rifle still unrestricted with that folding stock? I'm just wondering if it becomes too short to be non-restricted. Thanks for helping a newb.

It's unrestricted as long as the barrel is more than 18.5", this way, the overall length is still over 26" when folded.

Anything shorter you'll have to pin the stock and it'll become restricted.

There's also the new ISSC MK22 Scar-lookalike rifle as well http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5650203#post5650203

I was seriously considering that one as well but it just seems like there are way too many negative feedbacks from the early adopters...though some also have had good experience with it. 50/50, it seems. Maybe they had some issues in the first batch?

Great,

Thanks again guys. I'm pretty much sold on the Marauder stock. Will probably pick one up in about 3 weeks when I'm allowed to buy firearms (have to be state resident for >90 days).

Don't rule out the archangel kit for the 10/22 either. Aside from that, read all the posts on this forum or atleast seach. Every 10th is regaurdin tactical .22s these days. There isn't a question you can ask that hasn't been already. Good luck and welcome!

Just my two cents worth.....
I was in your shoes a week ago. I looked at the 10/22 conversion, mossberg tactical, sig 522, sr-22. Fyi, canada will be getting the gsg .22 and keltec su-22 very soon. You might want to look into those.
I tried the mossberg, at first I thought I was going to hold out for the flat top but when I tried the handle version, I was happily surprized. Having it means you don't need to buy extra scope risers to make the gun fit you. Also the price was right. $675 for a mk22 is alot for a .22 that has alot of issues!!!!
The issue with the 10/22 conversion is like any 10/22 you need the stock, upgraded barrel, upgraded trigger. When your finished you're into a .22 for over $1000!!!!!!!
Trust me, my friend just did it.
So long story short I went wi the mossberg. I guessed I'd have more jams than the other .22s since it was more that half the cost. But again it wasn't the case. Buy stingers and you will love this gun!!!!!!!!!! Trust me and you'll save over $500 bucks in the long run!
Also the S&W M&P 15/22 needs to be pined to 10 rounds in canada. Sooooooo stupid, a tactical .22 with only a 10 round clip is silly. I'm in love with how it brakes open to clean, the looks and feel. Just can't get over it being restricted and magazines need to be pinned to 10 max........

Looks Good! Heres a couple more.

you're misinformed, please get your facts straight before sharing such information.

The S&W 25-round magazine that comes with the rifle was deemed prohibited as is it also designed to be used in the pistol version of the rifle. Therefore, this specific magazine needs to be pinned to 10 rounds, as the pistol capacity applies. But that doesn't have anything to do with the rifle itself.

You can still buy a Black Dog 50-round drum magazine for your M&P15-22 in all legality.

The mag needs to be pinned to 10 because it also fit the pistol. Yes you can have a drum but do your research, the drums are problematic. I do know my facts thank you very much!
Who would want a 10 round tactical gun?
That it why there is sooo much fuss about this gun right now!
