As far as the plastic "feel"..well ..it's a .22 for cryin' out loud. If it were an actual AR/M4/centerfire ....that would be a concern. I've overlooked that "feel" very quickly and not let somebody else's opinions do the "feel" for me.

These rifles come heavly oiled for storage and if this isn't rinsed /cleaned out the bolt becomes sluggish causing FTF's , FTE's and also what appears to be mag probs sometimes. Also, after multiple shots , carbon deposits and unburned power will mix with the lube , mudding-up the action , just as sure as somebody is going to boi-biotch about my post...:p
Not a 100% cure ( because there are "lemon's" out there no-matter the product ) but degreasing is a "need to do".
I've done this by squirting ample amount of varsol ( paint thinner , bbq lighter fluid ) into the bolt/receiver and working the bolt back and forth briskly, to dissolve the oil/grease , then let it sit for awhile to let the fluid evaporate .
This can be done without taking the gun apart .
Yes , there will be drippage but it won't hurt anything ..just make sure where the drippage is going and wipe off the excess.
Over lubing is an all too often overlooked prob waiting to happen with semi .22's of any make.
After , literally 1000's of rounds fired , I've had zero probs with the operation of either the 702tact or 715T rifles or my four, 25rd mags and I feel thats because I use very , very little amount of lube ...and maybe I just got lucky with my purchases...;)

Those above models are ready to go and not always the best looking options (last 3 in the list I think are the worst looking [don't flame me, it's just my opinion]), but you can also get a Ruger 10/22 and put an aftermarket stock as others have indicated like the Archangel Nomad/Marauder or Troy Industries stocks. You can even put it into a Muzzlelite Bullpup stock which I just recently found.



Careful, putting a 10 22 into a Bullpup stock will make it prohibited.
 
Another nice thing about the 10/22 based guns is that you can use butler creek steel lips mags which are available everywhere, fairly cheap and super durable. I have 3 of them... they dont look as cool in the gun as the factory Nomad mag does but when im just out shooting looks arent nearly as important so I use my butler creek mags. IMO, they are some of the best feeding mags out there.

My brothers has a mossberg, as I mentioned... it was lightly used when he got it. He cleaned it and took it out to shoot and it jammed and FTE over and over. The gun is mint.... but I really feel the mag is a weak point. It doesnt sit tight and its flimsy. The gun looks cool... but it really is a $250 gun. A 10/22 with a nomad kit is worth $500.
 
pavement...tell him to change out that mag on the Mossberg.
The mag I got when I purchased the gun was a dud (Mossberg knows about this and supposedly is redesigning the mag)
The first day out with the gun I had 14 FTF and a couple of bolt jams in a box of 50.
My first thought was that this was a piece of crap gun.
But I did my research (found out about the mags)...got the dealer to exchange the faulty one (it's easy to check...the spring just...doesn't) and bought a backup. Since then I've put through 1500 rounds with three FTF...the kind where all you have to do is rack the bolt and all is well.
I'm not defending the mag issue...it needs to be addressed...but giving up on the gun is like forever giving up on your new Honda because it came with a flat tire from the dealer ;-)
 
Other than a minor extractor issue on my SR-22, I love it. Both my wife and I shoot it,its a good gun, and gets everyone at the range coming over to check it out.

You're right, I didn't even consider the length issue.
 
Instead of starting a new post, I'll just keep this one going if its cool.

I've read a bunch of threads -- mostly older saying that the ISSC MK22 is crap, something with a spring causing issues (I'm still waiting for my pal/rpal so im pretty green on most of this) I read a post on this forum somewhere but can't find it again using the search tool -- but someon had posted this problem was fixed, and the importer had replaced the springs on the unsold ones and had also sent replacements to the current owners.

Was that the main issue? Its a really nice looking .22 and I'm still debating purchasing it.
 
Anyone buying an ISSC I hope they find out the cost of extra mags!!!!!!! They are in for a surprize. LOL just like the 30 rounds colt mags!!! hahahah $60 each. What a rip!
 
I don't really know about the best "Tactical" .22 cause I've never really had any of my "AR Style .22's" in a combat type scenario... I have however placed targets and strategically planned on shooting them ?!?!?... I guess that could be consider a "Tactic". My vote is also always for a 10/22 variant in one form or another. The SR22 will always get the biggest nod because its the only "AR" style .22 that actually has the fit and finish of the big brother it's trying to imitate. Not plastic. And I'm not a plastic hater as I have many Kel Tec products.
 
Any idea where to get the Nomad kit for a reasonable price? I've seen it for sale for Over $220, the darn Ruger 10/22 is almost cheaper.
 
Calgary shooting centre has one. They don't have the pistol grip w/ stock, no one in canada has them in stock. Keltec even has issues keeping them in stock.

Clearly you know little about this gun .. SFRC lists these mags for less than $45.00 .. And should you do a little research you will find then under $40 if you buy the mags for the MSR RX22. The RX22 uses the same action as the MK22 but has an upgraded barrel and an adjustable trigger.

Mk22 manual should have been as accurate as the MSR RX22 (Anschutz) they describe in greater detail as to cleaning the action, and they even show in the manual that the cocking retainer bolt should be aided with locktite .. Had ISSC been as forthcoming they may have avoided some irate clients. I have a unit manufactured in May/2012 and it has had many upgrades over the units described in most web posts , including the iron site package that currently ships with the RX22 .

I also own a SR22 .. I would personally consider them equally reliable .. When a third party manufacturer comes along then maybe MK22 mags will be as cheap as the butler creek ones , but then if we SR22 owners were actually only using the included 10 round mags ( official SR) we may want to pay $ 40 or 45.00 for a 22 round mag that would actually look like it belonged to the unit :)
 
Hey go ahead and buy extra mags. I'm just saying I hope everyone takes into account the price of the mags. I bet most don't.
To each his own, personally I can't justify spending over $800 on a rimfire. However I do know alot of people who have sunk in over $1000 on there rugers.
 
Ive been researching this subject for awhile.....

the 10 22 "ar15" look alike is a winner, although i HATE having a dressed up non-military style gun and field striping it is a pain.... I want one that field strips like a "real" military gun like the AR15.

so the SW MP15 22 would be ideal...but it is restricted.... sobs

there is a conversion kit for the CZ858 now... non restricted... it is too pricy thou for a kit. (over $400).

most of the other guns mentioned are crap or are hard to strip, especially the scar knockoff... FTF etc crap.

The Kel tec SU 22 CA is a big winner so far for me....but Im not sure if i can justify spending twice as much for a gun taht goes for $290 in the USA, especially when the "take down" 10 22 rifle is only $390.........

so Im stuck between a 10 22 takedown and Kel tec su 22 ca.....both break down/fold down and both strip easy enough. the 10 22 minus the fake tactical casings are not too bad to strip, but add those casings... add the screw drivers.... bah...too much 4 me.

as far as the rugger 10 22 takedown goes, it dosent look very tactical but it IS tactical.. all plastic and stainless steel.....and it splits in half 20 inches long (~). you can take that thing anywhere and little worries of rust etc..... very shtf tactical

plus lots of parts, reliable, durable, etc etc

i am HOPING for some "tactical" stocks that dont have too much involved for screws etc.. snap in snap off......
so far i see some folk cutting 10 22 stocks to put on their takedowns
