I know the contenders are the Remington 597 VTR, Mossberg 22 Tactical, Ruger SR-22, Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22, Chiappa M4 22LR, and ISSC MSR Mk.II. (Is there any more that I missed?)

Anyways, my next purchase will be a tactical rimfire, and to be honest, it's not a big deal if its restricted, but it defintely gets bonus points if it does turn out unrestricted. The main purposes of this rimfire will be an more affordable and economical way of practising proper form with ARs. Also, my younger sister has expressed interest in my NEA AR thats coming shortly, but she's never shot anything bigger than a .177 chambered air rifle, so this rimmy would be a perfect stepping stone of getting her into firearms, and graduating her to the NEA AR, rather than have start out shooting that caliber. Like I said- bonus points if its unrestricted, because then it could theoretically could be used as a hunting .22.

So out of all the contenders, which one survives, and comes out on top for my needs? Not knowing these rifles- I'm asking you- the rimfire folk of CGN.

Honestly, if you want to work on your AR drills then the best thing to do is simply work on your AR drills with your AR. Live rounds optional (watch your muzzle and snap-caps-only in the living room). Buy a good, cheap, accurate .22 rimfire if you want one for it's own sake (or to help your sister learn to shoot) and spend the rest of your 'tactical .22' budget on surplus 5.56. Fundamental marksmanship is cross-platform.

The Savage Mk II is an excellent inexpensive rifle that will be more than accurate enough to practice and teach the basics on. Marlins are superb and inexpensive as well.

Please forgive me but this topic comes up atleast once a month. Just search tactical rifle please.
Anyone who knows s**t about the tactical guns will ask you a half dozen questions about you intentions and then list the same guns we all list.
What do you shoot, paper, gophers or both?
Do you want a metal gun or mind plastic?
Do you only want to shoot rimfire or be able to shoot 223s with the same lower?
Does weight matter?
Where are you wanting to shoot? Restricted sucks because you can't shoot on private land like mine.
Would you be happy with magazines that only hold 5 or 10 rounds max? Rimfire rifles that aren't restricted have unlimited ammo. I've seen pics of a guy having a belt fed 22 with two 300 round belts.
Do you want to put tons of stuff on your gun?
There are about a dozen tactical guns ranging from .22 to 308 to choose from.
I have the mossberg tactical 22 and have ordered the new flat top model. I have this gun because it's cheap, light weight and is unrestricted. I'm looking at sending in my restricted paperwork so I can get a porper AR and then buy a dedicated 22 upper. This will cost about $1200-1600 bucks for everything. The mossy is $320 and the keltec su22 should run about $675 like the mk22, colt, m&p15-22. The VTR and SR-22 are cheaper but cost as much or up to twice as much when you put tactical stuff on it.
It really all depends on what you are doing with the rifle and how much you want to spend!

To answer your questions:

1-Mostly paper, maybe small game if I get motivated enough to take my hunting course.
2-Metal, plastic, polymer: doesn't matter much to me, as long as its reliable and functional
3-Rimfire only, as I have an NEA AR15 CQB 10.5" on its way in the next few weeks.
4-Weight isn't a real big issue, but I'd prefer it to be on the lighter side, so it doesn't get too heavy when I put on (at the most) a foregrip and/or bipod, red dot and/or scope.
5-I'd like to use the high-capacity mags that the rimfire regulations allow.

I'm leaning towards the Mossberg. Its on the cheaper side, allowing for more of the budget (approx. a $600 w/ tax and accessories budget) to be put towards ammo and some decent accessories.

this! I just spent just over $400 buying accessories for my new SR-22. The problem with the SR-22 is that it doesn't come with handguard rails and I bought the complete rail set from DlaskArms as well as the reversible end plate. Then I dropped more money on a 2 to 1 point sling, AFG, ar style stock wrench (for the castle nut), ladder rail covers, magpul RSA, and the gen2 mbus. Accessorising hurts the wallet :(

My friend bought an sr-22 $560 bucks. It wasn't as accurate as my savage or mossy so he bought a dlask barrel $200 then rails $200, two 50 round drums $200 and two 25 round mags $60.
So without ammo, optics he is now in for his gun at $1220.
My mossy was $300 and 6 25 round mags were $200. So I'm in for $500. Yes I'm a cheap bastard.
Two other guns to look at are keltec sub 2000 and su-22. The su-22 is about 4 lbs. Hehehehehehehe

SR-22 was my choice. Lots of guys go crazy kitting theirs up but all I've done to mine was get a 6-9" bipod, a sling, 25 round steel lip mags, the mag loader, a flash hider, and a tasco red dot. Good to go - hours of fun. Shoots well and cleans very easily. (FYI I have about $1000 into mine between what I mentioned, a hard case, trigger lock, snap caps, etc...)

For me it came down to a choice between the SR and the Mossy. The mossy is all plastic and to me feels cheap. The SR is all aluminum and feels like it's higher quality. Of course this is reflected in the price, with the SR being in the neighbourhood of twice as expensive.

Don't take our recommendations and go buy one gun though...you should take our recommendations, go to the gun store, ask to hold all of them and decide which one you like best instead. That's how I made my decision.

get a rpal and a real ar15???

I guess you missed the part where he said he has a 10.5" NEA coming in the next few weeks...lol.

Would be the SR-22 for me out of that list. Having built one from a Nordic kit a number of years ago, I would do it again if I wanted another tacticool rimfire.

Ya, I missed that part.

But I dont see the point, really. get an AR15, and get any rimfire...... The fake ar15 22cal look pointless to me.

But it's just me really, some people like that and I respect that. I just personally think they look like toy guns....

Have a good day

how does the feel of the Smith and Wesson model feel? It also seems solidly built, however it does not have the non-restricted bonus points...

Well thats got alot to do with it...
NR !!!,
-no limit ammo mags !!! ,
-Lots of models to choose from ...whatever flav you want.
These are semi-auto .22's , simple and sweet ..
Their only as good or fast , as the person who is shooting it.
As far as to which semi is the best , I'll put up my old Stevens 87C to that challenge :D
I'm a Mossy tact fan and even with tons of accessories , it was at a price that I could deal with. The SR22 and the VTR are nice rifles too , but they're not any more reliable than what the proven Mossy 702 action is , for the extra coin...they do "feel" better , and they really do look great .
Yes, the Mossy tact is plastic , get over it...
They're tougher than they feel .
Mine has been totally reliable , accurate , and best of all , fun....6000rds of fun.
...it also looks cool .

If I wanted a RPAL , I'd get a 1911A1 , not a $1200 , 5rd limited rifle ....G:
