Best under 2000.00 factory rifle there is

maybe a kimber 84L

Really like the Kimbers, especially the Pro Varmint in .223. But for a general purpose rifle I would lean away from the thin barrels and stick with the standard sporter config. The Super Grades offer something of highly polished blued steel, well honed action and a nice classic stock with decent wood, inset swivel studs and a shadow line cheek piece. The new French walnut and flame maple stocks make we want another Super Grade.

Buy a graphite McMillan stock and an aluminum floor plate (or a Kimber!) for packing light. My .30-06 FWT with a MCM Hunter edge is about 6 1/4 lbs. A super grade with same might still be under seven pounds, and might be a little steadier with the sporter barrel contour.

Bergara, if nobody has already mentioned it.

1/2" out of the box.

Savage Axis is much cheaper / lower quality, not a fair comparison.

Man, I like em, and the two I had shot. But the cheap cast pot metal cocking piece shrouds that used to break turned me off. And the really soft threads that would strip out when that happened. They seem to have fixed that now, although the replacement still looks cast. Still if it works, great for them! The new ones with the camo stock/fluted bolt and cerakote look so sharp.

Went back to 700s. But they shot, and the triggers were great.

Another vote for Tikka.

Roughtech 6.5 PRC with a Leo 4.5-14 x40 30 mm in Talleys ;) RJ

The other one is a T3X Superlight Fluted barrel and bolt in 30-06

Here is my 3 cents

I've tried my fair share, I would go like this :

1 - Howa Randy Newberg in 308, magnificient rifle, comes with the Leuopold scope, an absolutely epic package, I don't think anything touches it right now on value.
2 - Tikka T3X, once specced out like the Howa you are tickling the 2k line, The Tikka is now the standard the way the Remington was for decades, I have to say I'm not crazy about the Tikka's satin finishes or stocks, the one I tried felt like unfinished wood vs the way you'd get the classic satin stocks on the Remington CDL, those finishes were nicer.
3 - Sako S20 , Yes I know people hate the look but from the Takedown stock to the quality action, these are really nice.

If you have an extra 500$ - Get yourself a Walnut Lupo, epic rifles though if it were up to me ...
