What's the best way to pull 22lr bullets...

...Without damaging them, or picking brass shrapnel out of my face.

I've got a few dozen 22lr duds that I've accumulated over the years, and I was thinking about pulling the bullets and using them as fodder for some mouse fart experimenting in a 223. Figured I'd start at 2.5 grains of Universal with a tuft of Dacron holding the powder in place, then top it with the pulled 22lr bullets.

Most folks on line suggest ripping them out with pliers, but that would damage or misshape the bullet.

Any ideas?

A loooong time ago in grade school we used to push side ways on the bullet with a thumb and pull them out, them pour out the powder for other uses

How hair-brained is the idea that I could just pinch the brass at the mid point with some side cutters, and "squirt" the bullet out the end of the casing? Too risky?

Ok so good news is I still have my face.

Bad news is it didn't work. Bullet won't pop out until you pinch it so close to its base that it deforms the bullet.

Pushing sideways was also a no-go as it deformed the base of the bullet. :-/

Could you cut the case in 1/2 losing the primed base and powder, then take sidecutters to cut the brass still on the bullet lengthways and with two pair of needlenoses pull the split case apart? Harold

The base of the bullet won't matter, as the driving band around the bullet (the thickest part) is what will be .23 in caliber

Quoted from The High Road....
All I did was take a piece of 1/2" nominal PVC pipe (it's what I had lying around), cut off half of one end (lengthwise) for about an inch, and drilled a hole through with a 15/64" bit. Put the round through the hole, put a piece of masking tape over it, and start smacking the pipe against a piece of wood, over a piece of paper to catch the powder and stuff. After a few whacks, the bullet and case both went flying into the air. Ended up with a bullet that actually weighs 38 grains, and about 1.3 grains of some kind of small flake pistol powder (some may have gone flying, so I don't know if that's the whole charge). It looks 100% identical in every way to Power Pistol, but I'm not dumb enough to try and ID a powder based on appearance.

What started as a project to use up some duds, now has my digging around for .22 pellets...

Anyone ever tried .22 pellets with a half grain of pistol powder?

There was a video Toeflaedermaus I believe, who used 22 pellets driven by 22cal blanks for impact chisels. He got tremendous speed and good accuracy but I believe he mentioned the barrel leaded up pretty badly.

Hmm. So what makes that safer than a kinetic puller? Being plastic instead of metal? Cuz I could just make a plastic collet for my kinetic puller...

Sure, what ever is easiest would be my first choice....

Not everyone has a kinetic puller I guess but a piece of plastic pipe might be laying in the scrap pile.......

Just hold the case with needle nose plyers, away from the primer rim, another pair of plyers and roll the projectile to the side. Just did a bunch last week. Zero issues.

And the bullets were still in good enough condition to reload in a 223?

If you don't mind me asking, why were you pulling them?
