Best Winchester Lever Gun for Deer

My picks would be my 92 in 44-40 that some jackass says it is illegal to hunt deer with now in Saskatchewan. Even though it punches holes in deer near the size of the Grand Canyon and my old 86 in 45-70 - now that’s a cannon.

My boy would say his model 55, which has shot a pile of deer and bears.

Why would a .44-40 be illegal in SK? I haven't heard this...

you guys do know that a win 1886 is a browning design made under lease.. so winchester is the copy and the replica of the Browning...

The Winchester Models 1886,1894 and 1895 were Browning designed, but they were not made under lease .Winchester bought the rights to the rifles out right.

The split between Winchester and Browning came after Browning wanted royalties for his new self loading shotgun.Winchester had always bought Browning's patents out right and refused to pay royalties.Browning then took his self loading design else where and was paid royalties for it.

If I was buying a Winchester lever, I'd look for a later pre-64 M94 that was factory drilled for a receiver sight and would use that option with a nice old steel Lyman sight.

I bought a pre-64 Model 94 in 30-30 in excellent condition today.

thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will carry this rifle with open sights into the swamp to look for a whitetail buck in southern Ontario in a few weeks.

Well done.Be sure to let us know how you do with the rifle.

What do you plan on using for ammo?A nice box of Winchester 170 grain Silvertips would make for a good match of your pre 64 Model 94.:)

I haven't bought any ammo yet; might stop in at SAIL on the way home and see what they have; have to buy my deer license anyways.

thank you for the tip on those 170gr Winchesters.

If youre hunting southern ontario make sure youre in a wmu that allows centerfire rifles. Most is shotgun and muzzleloader

A good friend of mine got his father in laws old 77 model94 this summer and took his first whitetail with it, it’s a nice little rifle with a Lyman rear peep sight on it. His father in law took good care of it, it was his bush plane gun for years and he shot his first deer with it back in the day.
