Beware of Remintons

Ive really had it with the poor quailty Remington has been vomitting out to the public as of late.

I picked up a model 700 .204 Ruger and had to spend money to get the trigger to a decent pull, the action bedded and bbl free floate to shoot decently. After doing this my extractor failed and had to be replaced. I now find out that the bolt face is to big to properly eject my spent shells.
I call Remington warrant depot and they say they can't do a thing for me, they can't ship bolts to Canada and advise me to just tip my rifle and dump spent shells...What a load of BS after spending almost $1000 on this thing.

The gunsmith in Saskatoon tells me that lots of Remingtons are coming in that are just garbage and we're paying good money for these rifles.
Ive had some good Remingtons but as of late 2 have had problems and am just warning you guys to steer clear.

From now on it will only be Savage or the higher end stuff for me.

great advice;)...I'd like to see more posts like this:).......I can't wait for the price of used 700's start going down.....:D

seriously...you should be able to fix it by tweaking the extractor to hold the case tighter against the opposite side of the bolt face recess when extracting so it doesn't fall off the extractor before it clears the receiver.I've had this issue with a 223 and it wasn't a big deal to fix.
Another option is a Sako extractor conversion.:D..and we've all heard the reasons why we shouldn't do it

I always thought they were "out of the box" great shooters.
I know a few pro shooters that use nothing but 700 series in a variety of calibers.
I guess something happened at the factory?

i must be lucky. i have owned and still own quite a few 700's. i usually adjust the trigger and bed, both cheap dyi projects. never had one that wouldn't eject or feed 100%. even the actions i have had rebarreled to different cartriges work fine.

Ive had 2 qulified smiths look at the bolt and the problem isnt in the extractor or ejector just poor work.

The sako extractor can be done but at a price tag of almost $180 and then I have to contend with the dangers of having it.
What bothers me is that I need to spend all this money just to get it to function and I spent over $900, not like its an SPS or 710

Makes my day when I take it to the warranty depot and the guy says there is nothing he can do, Remington won't ship a replacement bolt and that I should just tip my rifle to eject shells . I understand that problems arise when you mass produce a rifle but please fix the problem when a customer brings it to attention.

Cheers!!

Yeah, my experience too...:)

They are, but they don't feed or extract properly, holes drilled off center, warranty is awful, etc......other than that they are great guns.:D

Well I just got some great news!! Roger at Shooters Choice in Alta. just sent me an email that he would take care of the problem and do an exchange on a Tikka .204 All I can say is "wow' that is the kind of service that makes a great business!!
I won't be doing business with Remington anymore but sure will with Shooters Choice .ca

Cheers!!

I have a 700 SPS V in .204 and .308... never had a problem with either of them. Both accurate as hell as stock... but the triggers definitely need to be worked down. They are like 8lbs out of the box....

But I have been hearing a lot of horror stories with them, but I love mine...

Not to hi jack this thread, but what is the problem with a Sako extractor on a 700 bolt? I've had one on a custom built 700 (installed by a competent gunsmith) for a decade now with zero issues. Am I blissfully unaware of some hidden danger?

only if you have a catastrophic case failure and it blows out of the bolt and exits the receiver thru the lug raceway...if you duck real quick it might miss your head....

strange thing is,

a Sako extractor is never in danger of blowing out of a Tikka T3...at least you never hear about it.....there's nothing to stop it on that action.....

I just had a look, and I have 6 700s and a Model 7.Never had an issue with any of them.I bed and adjust the trigger on all of them, but most have shot well from the box.I have noticed that the newer Remingtons can be a bit of a mixed bag as far as finish goes, but my new Model 7 shot around an inch with factory loads without beddding, which is more than acceptable to me.Of course the groups are tighter now! Mur

I've had a few Remington's. Many have worked perfectly. And I've had problems with a few of them, too, including one that required a warantee replacement of the bolt body. To me, it seems that Remingtons of the early 90's or older were generally better built.
In any case, I've decided to forgo any new Remington purchases, mostly because there are so many other good choices available in that price range, and life is too short to have to #### around, trying to get something to perform as it ought to have performed out of the box.

I agree with the OP. I am a Hardcore Remington nut however I wouldn't buy anything they have produced in the last three years. My experiences with the new stuff have been terrible.

You're going to love that Tikka.
Never owned any 700s yet so I can't really comment. Have seen one or two brought back to TSE that have had problems though. One had something going on with the bolt where it wouldn't close with factory ammo of any kind in it! Weird!

Absolutely agree with the above statement. In the last five years I have purchased five Remington firearms brand new. Overall build quality and even function has been going steadily downhill and I feel qualified to say recent Remington quality control HAS TAKEN A DUMP!
Last episode was a NIB Marlin 1894c shipped to me from Cabelas with a cracked Butt-stock , chasing Marlin/Remington for a replacement part on warranty was a nightmare. I will buy my next Remington off the EE.

Mad Mikey:)

I stopped useing Remingtons back in the early 90s. Never had a problem with the old guns. Actually one of the dreaded extractor failures, though its had to blame the gun when you melt a case onto the bolt face and have to rip it off. New extractor and back in bussiness. With slightly reduced loads.
