big bore choice?

Hornady at one time made a 340gr BTSP 416 caliber bullet. Unknown why it was dropped. Cutting Edge Bullets makes a 340gr that should work in my 416 Rem. Mag. and 416 Ruger -

"This SINGLE FEED bullet was designed for magazine feeding in rifles chambered in .416 Barrett or single shot in .416 Rigby, 416 Rem. Mag, 40 Hart and similar cartridges...They will expand down to 1600fps. The required twist rate for this bullet is 1:14" or faster..."

I have an old made in Germany Voerre action Black Forest rifle chambered in 308 Norma Mag that my grandfather gave me I hunted almost exclusively with it for over 25 years parked it and replaced it with a 300RUM due to it just doesn't shoot accurately anymore its been sitting in the safe for some time now.

I've been planning on rebarreling it for years now but haven't due to not being able to decide what chambering the old rifle deserves a 416 cartridge that would fit perfectly in that action would be perfect.

The 416 Wby shouldn't recoil nearly as hard as the 460 Wby.

Shouldn't be...but even if it's close it would be vile. The 460 is in a very blurry place on the line between man-shootable and towable.

416 Taylor would fit the bill nicely...
 
Interesting thread.... I shoot my medium bores a lot (35 Whelen, 350 Rem Mag, now 358 Norma) and really enjoy them. This thread has peaked my interest in picking up a big bore:). I have actually picked of a few (4) boxes of .416 Rem mag ammo at Cabelas in Saskatoon as they have Remington Premier 400gr Swift A-Frames on for $62!!!! I don't have a gun in this caliber but could not pass up that deal! The old issue of buying ammo for a gun I don't have lol. There was still about 5-6 boxes there on Monday if anyone is local needing .416 Rem Mag Ammo.

this is how we start ... found bullets or ammo for a caliber that we do not have, cannot pass with a such good deal ... now finding the rig and a good deal can be interesting ...
 
The 416 Barrett has even better ballistics - a 0.72 b.c. 398gr bullet at 3150 fps (32" 1:11 twist barrel) which remains supersonic out to 1800 meters.

The Barrett M99 rifle weighs 25 lbs which is a bit heavy for a mountain rifle. :p

I can't think of a reason to go with a 416 Taylor now that the 416 Ruger has showed up.
Unless you already have a taylor of course.
 
The 416 Ruger is beltless and has about the same capacity as the 416 Taylor. A 300gr TSX recovered from a Bull Moose shot broadside through the shoulders, DRT, ~2400 fps impact speed.

Except for the fact that Ruger brass is less than awesome. Granted, you could use Douglas' method to fireform 300WM brass into 375 Ruger. Don't know why it wouldn't work with the 416.
 
The 404 Jeffery fires a 400gr .423" bullet at ~2150 fps. Seem to recall Ruger did a run of No.1 Tropical rifles in 404 Jeffery a number of years ago. A very cool and effective round but maybe some challenges in finding brass and bullets for it.
