Big bore rifle build

If you want it to be under 9lbs I’d consider a mercury recoil reducer to help tame the kick, and a good recoil pad. My 450 Rigby was 9.5 lbs and I found it quite manageable to shoot offhand or from shooting sticks. Have you considered a ghost ring type aperture sight?

OK so i got some more work on the rifle done, its now chambered and i have a stock for it,

i have no iron sights yet, I'm still not sure what I'm going to use for them, i also still need to blue the barrel

its still single shot, i need to lengthen the mag (or buy a factory 375 H&H mag) and open up the feed rials on the receiver. im going to load Woodleigh RNSN 480 gr to the book listed 91.5 mm / 3.602 OAL so i do not need to touch the feed ramp and lower lug support as the receiver is made for up to 375h&H length (come chambered in that from factory) and they run the same OAL as the 480gr bullets

and i want to get a custom stock made for it as well, the one on it i got for 125$ just so i can shoot it, i plan to not have a recoil pad, ill use a brass or may one layer old leather butt plate.

well i can tell you this gun was nothing and i mean NOTHING like i had thought it was going to be. it was very easy going (i may have hyped it up a bit in my head), i loved it, i fried 5 total factory weatherby rounds.
Grain Weight 450 Grains
Muzzle Velocity 2700 Feet Per Second
Muzzle Energy 7284 Foot Pounds
Barnes Triple-Shock X

the first was strapped to a tire, went well so the next 4 were shoulder fired. i weight 155 pounds and wore a tee shirt, i got a video of the first 2 shots firing. ill upload that once i get it from my buddy.

the rifle weights a wopping 8 pounds 6 oz. (if loaded with 3 round it weighs 8 pounds 12oz)

Thanks for the update! Did you do anything "special" regarding the stock bedding? I had read much about mauser stocks splitting under heavy recoil. Does that barrel have a recoil lug? How is the bulkhead behind the magazine/ ahead of the trigger holding up? - no cross bolt visible.

I shot it off hand. There are no sights on the rifle yet. And yeah there is a load of recoil. The limbsaver im sure helped and where im so light the gun just moved me back a step or atleast picks my front foot off the ground, so i dont take much recoil.

And right now the stock is just a factory stock for that rifle. It came on a 458wm. No cracks yet. I do plan on bedding the reciever though.

And when the walnut stock get maded for it ill be installing a recoil lug on the barrel. So the stock can be inletted for that. If i was a bigger guy it may crack easier.

Potashminer, it was replying to your PM is what got me back into this build. I had forgot i had it to a point i was able to fire it.

Seems im going to have to pluralize the word "build" in the title. I was telling a friend about this weatherby build and was saying when i get it done im going to do another big bore build on a P14 action. So he tells me to hang on minute and comes out of the back room with a sporter p14 and hands it to me and says i can have it if i build a nice sporting rifle out of it.

Well the plan for that rifle is the 500 jeffery. Its short (88mm) so it will fit the action simple enough. And the rim is only 1mm bigger then the 303 case.

"With newer reloads it made the 500 Jeffery the most powerful production cartridge in the world until the introduction of the#.460 Weatherby Magnum"

If i have the most powerfull round, it stands to reason i should also have the second most powerfull as well.

its made to give performance of 505 gibbs but in standard length action.

I ordered a 30" 50bmg barrel from tradex that i will cut to 24"
priced dies, 200$ from brownells
Priced a reamer, 150$ from PTG
ammo costs the same as the 460wm. (260$ a box locally)

And ill try and find a bsa or parker hale sporter stock for it.
ill be machining the receiver round like the rem30's. Gawd i hate those ears lol.

Pics will follow once the barrel gets here.

Seems the site i was looking at is american lol. So prices are up there a bit more then i had though if i need to import it.

There is a guy on cgn selling 5 rounds at 15$ each.
Ill probably buy the 5 factory rounds for the first shots.

Id assume ellwood epps can bring it in.

Sorry, but that went right over my head... are you building a .404 or a .500J? The two cases are totally unrelated and you can't make one from the other.

You are correct. I had assumed the 500 jeffery was a blown out 404 jeffery with a very short neck
.but i see the rims are different and the case length is as well.

Well i have no clue about the ammo then. Ill have to get IRG to bring me some up i guess. And after i shoot it ill stick to reloading.

Im not overly worried about getting any ammo now its still a while before ill shoot it. Ill get it figured out as i build the rifle. But yes 500j

The .500J is a short, squat little cartridge with a rebated rim. Rim size is the same as the .416 Rigby, body diameter is close to, or the same as the .505 Gibbs. I had some brass kicking around but I sold it to Ardent for a build he's doing.

well I'm still watching this thread :)

I have a nice older zastava in 458WM.

very deep blueing and it has a recoil lug on the barrel. No iron sights.

I was contemplating going with a 458 Lott conversion but I'm still playing with the 458WM

Ouch!!! I can feel the pain on my shoulder and concussion symptoms .........extreme prejudice will be experienced, avec sans muzzle brake. BTW, congrats on the build.

I picked up a Parker Hale .458 not long ago. Even at 10 lbs it's as much fun as I'm willing to put up with. I'll forego the Lott.

its actually not too bad, im willing to bet the limb saver has something to do with that. its more of a big push, the numbers on paper make it seem way worse then it is, i could read "limb saver" on my shoulder for an hour after though lol. here is a video on my buddy shooting it in my back yard hes 5'5" 180 pounds. the rifle stock is right handed , he shoots it on the left so proper fitment isnt there

I remember putting 10 rounds of 500gr solids downrange prone with my 458wm. Didnt think it was that bad till iwent to work and my right arm was way slower than my left

There is some truth to that. I wouldnt shoot this rifle prone and after i did shoot it it was like an hour later my right arm was very heavy feeeling. It felt similer to when you give blood for a few hours lol. Next day was fine though. I figured id see stars and smash my teeth together and pissibly brake my collar bone if i held it wrong. I have have had a shotgun rattle my head harder before.
