I don't see that in any of his posts.What I do see is:

The fact that they outperform some centrefire calibres is just a coincidence....not a comminusist plot to overthrow the the 45/70 gang.

That is very different from saying

He said it's better than any rifle

And by the way,if the gun used to fire those special slugs has a rifled barrel,as most of the specialty slug guns do,it is by definition a rifle.So how could a rifle be better than any rifle?

I read the entire 12 gauge vs 45-70 thread and didn't get that impression at all.My interpretation was simply that with some of the new slugs,a shotgun could compete with the 45-70.I saw no claims that the new slugs could compete with all the other cartridges.I don't doubt what was posted about the new slugs,but personally, I wouldn't take either a 12 gauge or a 45-70 on my elk hunts.

I take my 45/70 on elk hunts without hesitation!

well if by definition it is a rifle, then the whole idea of these new shotguns (aka rifles) and slugs is moot !!! You can't use rifles in shotgun only areas !!!

This poor pony has had the hide flayed right off of it, but I'll whip it a tad myself.
45/70, 12 gauge. 303 , whiz -bang magnum, it's all the same danged thing!
even when you get in close, or out to 400+, it's the nut behind the bolt, NOT the firearm that is the biggest variable.
There, I feel much better now........

I can't speak to "real world" senerios or ballistics(for that matter) but I do know that if I showed up to hunt Elk this fall carrying a 12 guage, my partner would probably kick me in the nads. This would not happen if I held a 45/70 therefore ... the 45/70 wins for Elk!
