Big Problem with my AR-15

So I have about 300 rounds of .223/5.56 down the pipe of my M&P Sport II. No problems in those 300 or so rounds. Took it to the range the other day and that's when it started to failure to feed/jam on me.

So here is what I did.

- Used a bunch of different magazines (2 different brands)....not the problem
- Shot a different type of ammo...not the problem
- Took the bolt carrier group apart and inspected it, not dirty or grimy added more oil for lube....not the problem

So I swapped the bolt carrier group with my other AR-15. The bolt carrier group from the other AR-15 ran fine in the M&P Sport II so that rules out pretty much everything besides the bolt carrier group. The bum bolt carrier group behaved the same way in my other AR-15.

Took the bolt carrier group completely apart cleaned and lubed and took to the range today. This is the behaviour:

Load a round, fire, brass ejects, does not feed another round and if only one round loaded will not lock the bolt back.

What's everyone thoughts/suggestions? Who is the Canadian warranty centre for S&W?

Cheers,

so you put another BCG in and it works fine??

Therefore its your original BCG not working?

Also it is not picking up another round but ejects?

sounds like short stroking.

check your gas rings

what ammo are you running? I would check the gas key and the alignment with gas tube, after that I would check to see if the mags are seating low in the magwell.

Same ammo as the first 300 rounds, read above I tried different types, gas key alignment seems fine checked that, mags not issue please read the post I switched bolt carrier groups between rifles.

Yes put in another BCG and it works fine, yes it was ejecting a round but not picking up another. Gas rings worn after 300 rounds FML.

They will likely want you to ship the whole rifle not just the BCG.

Did you check that the gas key is clear, and the bolt gas rings seams are not lined up?

Thanks will contact, just checked gas key is clear and ring seams are not lined up. What shat luck I have had with AR's my first one ended up having accuracy issues and needed to be sent back for a new upper and now this.

The gas rings don't need to be misaligned, that's an old BS myth. In fact the rifle(if built properly) will run with one gas ring. By the sounds of it, you definitely have a gas issue.

Sounds like gas rings, I'd skip the warranty department for now and just buy some new gas rings to try.
If the rifle works with a different BCG and the gas key is tight and the gas passage is clear I'd just try replacing the $10 gas rings first rather than paying to ship it for warranty and waiting a month for your rifle to come back.

Is the inside of the carrier nice and smooth where the gas rings ride?

Gas rings look fine no difference in how they look compared to my other AR.

Testing the gas rings is easy to do. Either pick up the BCG by the bolt in the locked position or set it vertically on a flat surface, bolt end down, in the unlocked position. The rings should be able to support the weight of the bolt carrier and prevent it from changing position.

As mentioned, there is no need to stagger the gas rings.

I had a similar issue way back when with a brand new AAC bolt carrier. Took it to tier one armory, put new gas rings in it, worked like a charm. As they said, sometimes you just get #### rings on a new carrier.

That BCG has worked flawlessly ever since. Go buy some new rings and slap them in, if it's not a gas key obstruction id bet it'll work without issue.
