Bill S-223

Looks to me like we as a group are going to have to start our own political party. Think about it.
Alternatively we support the Libertarian party en masse.

I have said in in another thread.

If you think about it, why would the liberals encourage an out-going senator who has no more political career to table such a bill? This is because if she fails it will cost the minimal of political capital, but if it succeeds by any chance it will be a handsome pay off by some of the party members.

If the Liberals see little resistance and hear no noise from us, even if this bill did not pass, they will see this as a sign of weakness. This is a prob of us as the firearms community as to how much resistance we will put up, a gauge of our response and a testing of the water as to how far they can go if they want to put in more gun control.

Therefore, it is imperative for us to put up fierce resistance and not to be complacent. This is the present and the future of the rest of the Liberals government regime in the next 4 years.

True that!!!

^^This is the truth, we need to act^^

I'm loving how prohibited handguns are totally exempted from all of this crap. Who wants to bet that nutty's husband has a collection.

The bill received a second reading in the senate today

http://www.parl.gc.ca/Legisinfo/BillDetails.aspx?Language=E&Mode=1&billId=8177186

We need to communicate our displeasure to our senators...

Now that becomes dangerous. Interestingly, the seating was ONLY 28 senators! There are 42 Conservative senators in the Senate! Where were they?! It seems that only the Liberal senators were present. If it goes like that the bill has a chance for a third reading! Apparently nobody in the unelected Senate gives a damn about our protests.

Why don't we organize protests across the Country. The media would have to take notice and so would our elected officials. Visually seeing us will have much greater affect than some letters and emails. I have never done anything like this before, but I would join in and participate. Just look at the "what do you do for a living thread" and you can see we have people from all walks of life involved in firearms. If we just sit in front of our computers, writing letters, we will not be taken seriously.

Don't mean to be all doom and gloom, but who's to say she hasn't found someone to sponsor the bill once she's gone? I'm certain there's more than a few antis that would be more than happy to take over the bill and take credit for it provided it gained any traction.

Stop the drama, the bill is not going to pass. Its beyond asinine. Go shoot your guns.

Slim to less than zero. The Senate is a conservative majority and the liberal senators there aren't on good terms with the house liberals. This is a senators last feel good attempt to pass her gun control bill before she retires in like 4 days from now. Don't believe the hype. Most people on this forum don't know anything about politics or how our government even works. Hell most of them blame the Liberals for the gun laws we have when they were written by the ####in conservatives. If you've ever been pissed that your VZ is pinned to 5 remember it was the party in blue that did it.

What he said

Debating 101

Hmm it would appear they are trying to use a number of debating fallacies here in an attempt to convince the media and general public of the necessity of the bill.

False attribution – an advocate appeals to an irrelevant, unqualified, unidentified, biased or fabricated source in support of an argument.
False equivalence – describing a situation of logical and apparent equivalence, when in fact there is none.
Disambiguation - a logical fallacy in which a clue or piece of information is or is intended to be misleading, or distracting from the actual question.
etc... etc..

Also I think this topic redirects and distracts the public and press away from what the Fed Gov needs to be focused on 1) the crappy/stagnate economy 2 bad trade deals that undermine what jobs we do have 3) because of 2 the downward trend in the quantity and quality of jobs in Canada 4) the seemingly growing number of street people (men) roaming our cities and towns begging, shoplifting with each costing tax payers approx "$100k/yr" in gov support services (no I'm not kidding) and untold amount of financial harm to stores being shoplifted from all because the Gov pampers them. (I'd suggest all homeless are forced enlisted in the military for corrective discipline and reeducation skills training until worthy of a job) and those with real mental issues get sent to mental institutions for focused help and recovery. 5) Historically our willy nilly, politically over correct immigration policies (pressured by big businesses) that bring in foreign works to/who over supply the job market reducing our wages. Who then naturally then bring in their immediate families and relatives, who's Net Contributing economic value vs the Gov and Health Care burden they represents and for whom the ROI I would suggest equates to nothing less >3x generations and or >60 years before a net positive economic contribution is seen. Finally our overly compassionate misguided and failed immigration policies for which appear to disfavor Christian and other non Muslim groups facing genocide in the middle east (specifically I want to see statistical data as to the religious makeup of all the people being offered asylum (to see if our politicians are on the payroll and or thumbs of local Muslim groups....and or Tehran and Riyadh or are as a group under the sufferance of Stockholm syndrome) All things being equal and most logically the most at risk (the most persecuted) a.k.a Christians first, then non Muslims should be let in first, Muslims then and only after significant effort to other regional neighboring countries some of which who are at fault and are currently instigating and therefore responsible for this crisis. BTW if the crisis was reversed my friends tell me they would never think of letting westerners into their country... and yes I am being a kind Canadian in the expression of my views here... isn't it sad state of affairs we live in. 5) Our media (the so called guardians of democracy) who only make a buck by airing and writing about-feeding off conflicts and controversially and decisive topics but whom ignore prudence and will allow air time for the most ridiculous counter argument to any situation and thereby giving them some level of credibility in the eyes of the public. 6) The weak laws on gun crimes and criminals that use guns in Canada, likely so that it's easier on the Police to arrest the perps as they know they only get a slap on the wrists when they go to court 7) With the economy getting tougher what's going on in Chicago at this moment criminals with "illegal" guns causing crime and murder could over time certainly happen here... "3000 Chicagoans" shot in 2015.

So when politicians can't actually fix something they attempt to appear to be taking action by.. going after the only people they have control over.. .yes you guessed it law abiding citizens.

This all being said and therefore Gun control is THE LAST THING the fed Gov should be worried about! They need to get the above "all" straightened out first before even spending one minute of time and taxpayers dollars on such a low priority item and only because they can't fix the real problems facing us.

Fallacy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies

P.S. These are my opinions and feelings as of today, I am willing to change my views in light of significant new information on these topics.

Senate bill S-223 read for second time
Posted by Brian in News, Politics On April 19, 2016
Senator Hervieux-Payette during S-223 speech: “Nobody is opposed to registering their car for … so I think we should do the same thing for firearms”

Senator Hervieux-Payette took to the Senate floor today to read her proposed bill S-223, deceptively titled Strengthening Canadians’ Security and Promoting Hunting and Recreational Shooting Act, for the second time. The bill, which we previously reported on here, aims to further restrict lawful gun ownership in Canada to “hunting firearms” (the definition of which is intentionally absent of all semi-automatic centrefire firearms), to replace the term restricted with circumscribed, to make the transportation of circumscribed firearms possible only for “transporters” (a dedicated transportation business), to prohibit the storage of circumscribed firearms in a home, and, among others, reinstate a new registry for all firearms.
During her speech, Senator Payette made an appeal to the emotions by reminding the Senate of the recent events in La Loche, Saskatchewan, as well as oft-mentioned tragedies from the Dawson College shooting in 2006 to the shooting deaths of three RCMP officers at the hands of Justin Bourque in 2014 – going so far as to quoting Bourque’s lawyer as saying “no hunter needs a weapon like the one Mr. Bourque used – no one” (in reference to the M305 used in the Moncton killings) and attributing similar quotes to former police officers and hunters she claims she has consulted with.
Most disturbingly, however, is her accusations that the Senate and the House of Commons appealed to the “gun lobby” in Canada instead of Canadians on the matters of C-19 (Ending the Long Gun Registry Act) and C-42 (Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act) not realizing that Canada’s “gun lobby” are the Canadians she so vehemently pretends she wants to protect – all the while likening the Canadian gun lobby to that of the US, calling the US policy on firearms a “failure”, and using cherry-picked and poorly-represented American statistics to support her position on gun control.
It is important to note, however, that second reading of C-223 has not been completed. A motion was carried to adjourn the debate until Senate’s next sitting scheduled for tomorrow. It is also important to note that experts believe this bill will be defeated during this stage much like it had been last year, especially given the Conservative majority in the Senate.
Note: This article will be updated with a recording of Senator Hervieux-Payette’s speech, as spoken by a translator, and the official transcript of the speech once they are available. Please check back in approximately one hour.

The most brilliant remark by our darling senator Hervieux-Payette: “Nobody is opposed to registering their car for … so I think we should do the same thing for firearms”

I canNOT believe taxpayers foot the bill for this nonsense.
I canNOT believe someone as obviously clueless as this dope have jobs that pay the way they do.

I'm at a complete loss, really.
Why are idiots running the country??

Please, just retire and go away.

Gun registration = an opportunity for the Gov to reinstate a fraudulently over-costly system that will likely cost us Billions!

I can't believe this isn't more front and centre. I can't believe that more large firearm retailers aren't up in arms about this. NFA, CSSA, CCFR, is anything being done or is there really nothing we can do?

I corrected the date it is the 1st not the 17th June as I previously said.
I agree 100%. Where are the firearms organizations that we pay membership fees so that they will support us when we are under attack?? Its always the same sh$t!! "Enter our gun raffle to help raise funds for a stronger organization". "Here is a sticker and a flimsy knife as a gift for renewing". Where are they when we need them???!!!
