Yes, the '06 with at least a 175 grain bullet is legal in BC for bison.

From the 2007-08 LEH regs:
Hunters are prohibited from using a weapon other than:
a) a rifle that fires a 175 grain or larger bullet retaining 2712 joules (2000 foot pounds) or more
energy at 100 metres, or
b) a bow having a pull greater than 22. 6 kg within the archer’s draw length, an arrow greater than 26
grams in weight and a broadhead greater than 8.1 grams in weight and 2.2 cm in width at its widest point.

I shot a 1900lb bison with a 30-06 165g. One shot between the eyes and a bit high and that was that. And it didnt split the skull either. Personally, I wouldnt hesitate using a 30-06 on anything in North America.
 
the reason I ask is the guys at the hunting store told me you can olnly skot them with a magnum cal, so i was kind of down cause i am getting an 06 and would one day love to take one down!

You will learn over the next few years that most of the "guys at the hunting store" couldn't find their arse with both hands. A counter monkey that has true knowledge about what he sells is a rare and wonderful thing and most stores settle for warm bodies that will work for minimum wage.
 
"...the guys at the hunting store..." They've likely never seen a buffalo never mind killed one. There's nothing in North America that requires a magnum of any kind to kill. Your .30-06 will be fine.

you mean ground hogs DONT require my .300WM at distances beyond 50yrds?

he is right though pretty much every big game animal can ,will and has been taken using standard calibires and IIRC the 30-06 has been used successfully to hunt EVERY big game annimal on the continent for a REALLLY long time
 
Depends on the individual rifles. I have slow 30-06s and fast 308s, and there's very little difference between them. I also have one 30-06 that regularly pushes all bullet weighst 200 fps faster then any 308 I own, so both sides of the coin are represented. In hunting terms, I relly see no difference and use them interchangeably. The 06 has a small edge with heavier bullets, that's about it. - dan

Very little difference between the 30-06 and 308 until you start hand-loading for them . With hand-loads a modern production rifle in 30-06 will be substantially faster than the 308 when both are loaded to equal pressures.
 
I think the poster's question (and the "counter monkey"'s response) may have had to do with BC's regulation regarding energy at 100 yards, when it comes to hunting buffalo. Anyone have their ballistics tables handy? Mine are out in the shop.

I like first hand responses when I post a thread, so here's mine to you.

I have seen a lot of moose, caribou and Buffalo shot.

I saw a Buffalo shot in the head with a 30 06 at 100 yrds and get up and run, I saw one get up and walk away at less than 100 yrds.

I have shot 3 in my life. am not a fan of all the Mag calibres but will say that there was no walking away from a 300 wsm. Each one I shot was with my buddies 300 wsm. Bang, done! He has done the same 3 times. Our other hunting buddy, a fine shot with his 30 06, watched the Buffalo rise like Zombies even after a shot to the head.

Can a 30 06 do it. i'm sure some people can with it, but i have never seen it and would never try it. I have seen a Buffalo dropped at 150 with a 223, again, would never try it,
