Since I've sent my rifle off to Rauch for the great looking black coating I realised my magazines are still covered in the gray bake on stuff. I was hoping to not sand blast the paint off to avoid warping the magazines so first I tried to strip off the paint with gunwash, that stuff will strip the paint off anything. I let the magazines soak overnight and all it did was sort of bubble small areas of paint on a two of the magazines, one mag still looked brand new. I ended up having to sand blast them all. No warpage, likely due to the ribbed construction.

You'll also notice I drilled a small hole half way down the rear rib. This was the hang the magazines. The aluminum rod has to fit tight for proper conductivity and the rivet hole just wasn't working. This also let the mags hang more balanced. I also drilled a hole in the bottom plates for hanging as well. I'm not at all concerned about one little hole.

They turned out amazing! The top part that goes into the gun is clearly a different metal. Either cast aluminum or maybe manganese as suggested by the boss. The different color was not intentional, that's the color it took when it went into the acid bath and it never did take the dye. Can't wait to see them in my gun when I get it back! Will probably fit a lot better without the extra layers of paint.

We do anodizing at work, I ran them through with some other parts. After how nice these turned out, I'm thinking of doing all my aluminum AR15 mags too.

Look up anodizing, its idiot simple. The only expensive part would be buying a blasting cabinet. Or get them sandblasted somewhere else and then anodize them at home. All you need is a battery acid, a battery charger, some acid for cleaning, distilled water, and the dye. Hell, we use those propane turkey deep fryers for all our stuff. Cook the dye and cleaning water in those. It's not hard coat, but its more than good enough for me!

So is a pop rivit or a screw and nut acceptable to replace the magazine limitation after cleaning and getting the magazines coated?

I'm thinking about sending my mags out to get them done when I sent off my rifle to Rauch for coating/lining. Is anyone here offering an anodizing service here?

How does aluminum behave when it's freshly cleaned? Does it absorb stuff like steel likes to?

"Technically" a nut/bolt is a no-no because it has to be a permanent fixture. Also, if you remove the rivet in order to hang your mags for plating, as soon as you do so you've created a prohibited device. ArmedSask drilled a 2ndary hole, that's ok.

I suppose it depends on if you're doing the work at home or at a shop and your level of comfort in being bent over by the CFC. It's a 90% BS problem to have to contemplate.

What about hanging the mag from the retaining hole at the base of the mag? Remove the spring/follower and hang vertically?

Impressive work... Ive been thinking about doing this for my mags aswell.

Not sure if I want to experiment doing this at home... sooo... PM sent

Um, no. I removed the rivets because I had to disassemble the magazines for the process. There is nothing prohibited about magazine components. I simply pinned them again after putting everything back together. In fact, the springs never even left my house. Just the mag bodies and floor plates came to work with me.

As a manufacturer/dealer, I'd suggest brushing up on the legalities.

You may want to check into that... the RCMP have started charging people with magazine components as prohibited devices. There were a few Canadians returning from SHOT this year charged with multiple counts of Prohibited devices after stripping PMAGS & bring them back. There's also a case pending of a colleague that was busted on an inspection with stripped deriveted AR mags... same reason that you used, to repaint. They have started interpreting & enforcing the laws differently.

... as a manufacturer dealer I have brushed up on it.

Ah yes, but that was while attempting to import magazine components. They haven't allowed importing of magazine components for years. Are you sure that wasn't the CBSA pulling their usual stunts and not the RCMP?

Possessing dissembled magazines, especially for the purpose of servicing, is not illegal.

There's at least one case of them nailing people for de-riviting. I was not provided the specifics of his case, but he's being hit with "the act of removing the limiting device prior to it being disassembled". Since you can't strip a pinned mag, you had to depin it to strip. And since when assembled holds more than 5rnds... Catch 22. It's all about intent, and proving it. I guess it depends on how far you want to take the Law if they happen to walk in at the wrong time. His case is only 2 months old, and you know how fast they'll work to finish it... in the meantime they have all his guns. Guilty until proven innocent, right.

Is it likely anyone will ever know? Not.. but I know personally from one fellow.. don't take your time doing it.

I figured you come back with something like that. ;)

You and I both know its a BS charge and hopefully the judge will see that. I will continue to unpin my magazines for servicing and re-pin them as soon as they are assembled. I'm confident I am following the law and would fight that charge until I was broke and dead.
