Black Bear King of the internet COVID edition

Sorry no pictures as I didn't find him till after dark. Got my first ever black bear. I have been baiting (Ontario) for over a month and only had three small ones coming in. I shot the biggest of the three as I am running out of time to hunt this spring. About 40 or 50 hours setting up and placing bait and six hours hunting. One broad side double lung shot with a 338 win mag. Bugger still ran 150 yards and tough tracking (used to hunting whitetails in the snow). Had to butcher it over night as it was to hot to hang him. Should be good eating!

Thanks Ardent and Conor. The meat is always the best prize of any hunt for me. My bears hide had a big patch of thin hair so I did not keep it. I kept the skull to try cleaning up for a momento.

I got mine last evening. A beauty of a North Coast BC bear. Used Tikka T3 Hunter in .30-06 180 gr bullet. Don't have skull or hide size as I am only concerned with the meat an as I have not the best health it was all I could do to retrieve him and dressed and hung in the most expedient fashion. Got him in a higher elevation logging cut that has greened up during Happy Hour before sundown. Temp was appx 9 degrees and a slight wind blowing and clear sunny skies. My biggest bear to date 300+ lbs. I will keep the claws to clean up as a keepsake. Will make for some great sausage in the coming year.

Sorry... it only "sounds" easy when written in a couple paragraphs... did I mention the 100 or so ticks I pulled off my body? Found another one an hour ago...

yes fair enough. I know you have decades (sorry) of experience with these critters so it stands to reason your success didn't come overnight. good job again, sounds like a hell of a spot for future hunts.
i know i'll regret saying this but i have yet to see a tick anywhere on me, crawling or otherwise so i'm pretty excited about that.

it is not the ticks crawling on you that you have to fear but the disease they are bringing. we just lost a close friend that caught it 10 years ago in europe and the end was really bad.

The area we were hunting is the northern edge of tick country, but has had no cases of Lymes disease... so other than having the gross little b*astards crawling on you and the itch from their bites, we are pretty safe.

Some very nice bears displayed here! Congrats to all the successful hunters. My BIL has a big boar hanging around
his place. I may have to go over and tune him up. I bought the tags, but they are good through the fall, so no panic
on my end. :) Dave.

Big bear ltjones, can tell from the head size your photos don’t do him justice, congratulations on the full freezer.

Yes unfortunately I was alone and darkness was closing in and got a bit of video and grabbed the pics from that. I still had to get him down the hill and into the truck so grabbed what I could for pics and vid. Was just too much to do and little time to do it in with not the best body health to do it with lol.

Is there still one month of season left throughout most of Canada?

I kind of wish I could get a third tag...

Very nice picture of a very fat bear!

Have only seen a couple of those up here in fifty years. One was one of three cubs, and momma was there so never even tried for a picture.

Ted

First year hunting bear by myself. I started baiting about 5 weeks ago in a spot about 200 yards from a big swamp, low to no hunting pressure where I know there should be a few bears. I have my stand set up 25 yards away - In the barrel I had scraps from throughout the year, dog food, and marshmellow/syrup/jello mix/sugar that I heating up and poured in. I dumped about 25L of used fryer grease on the ground....
Not one bear came in for a few weeks, and then June 1st at 7:00AM I had a decent bear on my trail camera. He/she was just getting into the barrel and at 7:10 on my video, it shows it running away, and at the end of the video, a wolf's head/shoulders pop up in the green bush looking where the bear ran....what luck!!

So now I'm wondering if the bear will even wanna come back, it had just discovered the barrel and in 10m a wolf chases it off and the wolf doesn't even come to the barrel where dog food had spilled on the ground. A week ago I mixed water/sugar/vanilla extract and sprayed all over and up in trees - I have since added popcorn and bread - Any more ideas guys? I have a few days left to hunt - because of work, maybe 3-4 days. If I don't use this tag, and get a bear this fall, can I still get a 2nd tag during the fall? Sorry for the long post. Thought you guys might get a good laugh, I did, it's funny but also not funny!!
