I call this one Curious Bear! Demonical would name it ManEater! :D

Black bears are often not taken seriously enough, I'm guilty of it too. They may be half the size, or less of the bigger bears but they're still a wild animal and should be treated with the same respect.

I figure bears teeth are bigger than mine... Therefore the rifle even things up a tad.

Doesn't matter what type of bear it is, if it decides you look tasty, it's time for it to become a rug.

Great pics, and story.
Never had much luck scaring wildlife off with rifle shots. They don't understand what they are, so are not afraid. This is with moose, deer, and bears.
The reference to deer, is their apparent disregard to shots fired while hunting. If two deer are running towards you, and you shoot one, the other is just as likely to keep coming, as it is to run, unless you are spotted.

TBart, I guess you had to be there. Not sure about the bear that approached you but the bear that was coming at me was deadly serious.

Also, no rocks to be found, nobody with another gun standing behind me or beside me. Just me and the bear. Which means I had no time to #### around. His attitude during the whole encounter was very, very different from any bear I have ever seen.

I can see where I should have maybe picked up on his behaviour sooner, but once things got rolling I know I did absolutely the right thing... other then sparing the bastard maybe...

That's my story.

Hey big D when we get to camp this fall we'll look after him and ANGUS! Great Pics. Later Dude.:dancingbanana:

Bull, I am already planning on camping there next spring for 7-10 days; wall tent, the works. Can you make it?

I want that big bastard Angus. If you had seen the size of him you woulda ####! Mind you, you would not have been fooling around and you would have had the M-70 .338WM and we'd have had pics of a dead bear.

That other idiot bear needs to grow up a few more years and then he'll be something else; beautiful color.

Later.

I have found the bears in that area to lack fear of humans more than any where else I have hunted. In one particular day I had 3 bears (7 if you count cubs) approach me from down wind AFTER smelling me. The closest I let one come was 15 yards before I shouted it down. That was just a few miles from where you took the pics.

My son and I just experienced the same sort of a behaviour from a black bear.

We were riding our quads back to camp when and filming with our Video camera when we spotted a black bear on the road we stopped and sized him up because we did have tags but he was just under 6' so he didn't interest us.

When we say that he was to small we started riding closer to him when we got near he slowly retreated to the tree line which was about 30 yards from us.

He growled a few times at us as we started loading our rifles and because we were prospecting I loaded my SRH in 454 Casull as well.

This bear slowly over the next 10 to 15 minutes wandered around finally crossing the logging road to the other side and started inching his was towards us.

when he was only 15 yards away I told my son to get back onto the quad and back up, when we started the machines the bear gave a little look of surprise and slunk off the side of the road again so we drove past him.

When we were about 100 yards up the road we unloaded everything and headed off to camp.

It was a great experience.

This has probably been discussed but a black bear killed a 70 yr old woman a couple weeks ago about 45 minute drive from here near the PQ/Ont border

Young bear that has been rubbing, that is where the brownish tinge comes from, he's just a garden variety black bear. I wasn't there so I can't say but on the surface you come across as a very jumpy person. Bears are curious creatures.

Black bears have killed more humans than any other type of bear. You should have shot it.

Maybe in this case this bear was showing signs of territory or mating behaviour . What ever the case may be that is one bad experience I would of put him on my den wall glad everything turned out in your favour

3-4 times the size of a full grown Rotti and I don't f..k with them neither.

Just curious Campcook....is the Casull something you can get a permit to carry out west or do you just do it?No need to incriminate yerself if you wish to decline answering.
As far as I know,I can't even get a permit to carry a .22 revolver for trapping and ADC work around here? Also,it'd be nice to have a big bored revolver for guiding/baiting/bowhunting bears.Lugging bait and climbing out of a treestand in the dark with nothing but a pointy stick for defense gives me the willies sometimes.Pain in the ass to lug a slug gun around everywhere.I grew up tramping the woods here and never really worried about blackies until I got into hunting them and gained a new respect for their power and speed.Hard to beleive it's the same damn country?

I have an Authorization to Carry handguns permit for BC & Alberta that legally allows me to carry one of two Ruger Super Redhawk chambered in 454 Casull.

I have this due to being a Self Employed Free Miner (prospector) in both BC & Alberta.
