Hi guys, just thought i would let you know ,I picked up the black oxide metal blackening kit from Caswell Plating
http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/black.htm
It seems to work quite well and very easy to use :D
but you do have to treat the work the same as hot bluing when it comes to preping the work
check it out
it was like ...$150.00 for the 2 gal kit shipped Can Post
And the stuff lasts forever :D

This new technique was developed by the commercial gun blue manufacturers as a more environmentally friendly system than the commonly used hot application. Parts requiring blackening are simply placed in the liquid at room temperature, no electrical power is required.

You might as well get set up for that too........ :|
I have some M1 stainless gas cylinders you can do..... :D

OK I'll look into it :D
I'm also going to order the electroless nickel plating system
I've read extensively about it and it seems to be the best system for guns

Blueing

Hi Cam I have had that system in my machine shop for 2 years now. Have used it on firearms and related parts. The finish if ok, very good corrosion resistance but certainly not a high lustre finish. I found glass beading then using the system give you a very good black matte finish. And yes it is easy to use but remember cleanliness is next to godliness when it comes to using it. I tink you will like the results.

Blueing

Hi Cam The system I have isn't from Caswell but just the same chemical. They send me an alkiline cleaner and a mild acid cleaner. Dipped in the alk. cleaner first rince with water then in the mild acidic cleaner rince with water and then into the blackening solution. I think any good cleaner that doesn't leave a film would work well i believe.

the oxphocreates a chemical reaction with the steel and produces a oxide. It is a mild acid I believe. The Caswell is either a magnesiun or copper phosphate that is atually a coating. It is sort of like parkerizing. This coating does hold lubricant in its matrix therefore being a god corrsion resister.

re: Caswell plating kit

I wonder how this compares with a room-temperature spray-on finish such as Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II, esp. as regards durability?
