Black Rifle Optics...

KevinB, this thread is very-very informative.
Thank you and everybody for the reports and opinions!
When you have time, please don't forget about some updates to this thread.

I had two Leupold MkIV MR/T 2-8x's with me in Iraq -- they went to Kako911 and RobAk as they did not offer me anything that I wanted at the time. The are good (but not excellent glass) and the illum reticle is okay - but not for daylight.
I've had the 1.5-5, the 2-8 and the 3-9 -- all where nice, but I foudn them wanting in operational needs.

I've a couple NF scopes - I like them - but for different things.

Currently I favour Aimpoints (M2,M3,M4 and T-1 Micro), and the S&B Short Dot for M4 platfroms.
Going to a rifle (18 or 20") 5.56mm platform the 2-8 and 3-9 Leupolds are good -and the NF 2.5-10 as is the 3-12 or 4-16 S&B's.

The old adage how fast can you afford to go comes in.

99% of the board readers will be well suited with any decent optic that can hold a zero -- our LE and Mil members will need more to use.

I'm looking into a new scope to use on the BlueStar for service rifle this year. I like the Elcan but it is too high on a Sig, I've also used the 3-9 MR/T M1 but it has too short an eye relief for the Sig, a 4.5-14 LR/T M1 was nice but really it is way overkill for service rifle. I've tested out a 1.5-5x MR/T M2 which fits on the Sig nicely and is quite good but I'm temped by the 2.5-8x M2. I'm not convinced that I like mildot or TMR reticles for the faster action shots. I think that a 2.5-8x MR/T M2 with a picket post reticle (like the Elcan) might be just right but it doesn't seem to be an option. BTW... I've also tried the IOR 4x24 on the Sig and it worked quite well but I'm not sure that it was ment to be used by people with glasses and the elevation adjustments are a bit course for some shooting though they are close enough if you have the right load and barrel lenght.

I'm sold on the T1 Micro Aimpoint, and Short Dot.
I would keep the X3 Aimpoint magnifier on hand if using the Micro on longer (14.5-16") guns.

I have no faith in the Spectre DR.

EO's 553, 554, 557 models IF they fix the circuitry issues are decent as well -- if your a really good shot and can use the 1MOA dot on the EO's and can live with their other uses - they can be better for precision CQB than the Aimpoints.
As someone on another board said - a T1 with the EO reticle would be the heat.

Larue mounts for anything I use...

Kevin:

Much of the discussion here revolves arround 223/5.56, and understandably so.

However, What are your thoughts on optics for AR platforms in 308 with longish (26") barrels

regards

AbH

26"? The US Mil found that the 20" 7.62x51 NATO barrel gives the best performance in an AR style gun - 24" and 26" guns are deterimental.

For a 20" Mk11 type gun - I would go with a 2-8, 3.5-10, 3-12, or 4-16, depending upon what it is primary used for.

I think the 3-12 is the better across the course - as I would go for a 16" .308 for urban work

Kevin:

Appreciate the comments, and I have headed your words :). The opportunity to own a 16" presented it self, and the "new for me" upper is now the way with a PRI GB charging handle.

I have a 1.5-5x30 in the bin and will start work with that, mounted in NF Extra high rings, and see how that works. These are robust looking rings, and I prefer direct ring/upper receiver contact if at all possible.

Will try the 3-12x if teh opportunity presents itself. :D

All the best and please keep the updates coming.

Regards

AbH

I ran out of elevation adjustment on my little Docter reflex sight which is mounted on a picatinny rail on the handle of my M4. I am thinking of puting a shim under the rear of the rail to make it slope a bit down. I need the red dot to be lower. Yes, I want the sight on the handle, so no flat top lectures please.

T1 - smaller, lighter.
In the game of combat optics, a smaller, ighter optics that does as much as the bigger ones (admittely at a less battery life, but still way beyond an issue)

Dr Optics -- dude, the T1 and H1 Micro's put those bad boys back into the stone age...

I have a Swiss Arms Green Special

So I take it I need a picatinny top rail (Kyle Precision or ?)

I also was looking into Eotech, etc... and think that the ACOG's are the way to go. I plan to use this for tactical rifle meets / practicing... I am a civilian and won't be in the sandbox... just BC / Canadian shooting etc...

Any recommendations? I don't mind spending good money on good things.

Thanks!

I'm curious would an Aimpoint Micro co witness on the SA?
