I'm sure this topic has been beaten like a dead horse but i'm going to ask anyways. What are your reccomendations on a black (or green) rifle that is non-restricted and under $1000. I want an AR and a hunting rifle but am not willing to put out that kind of cash so I am looking for a gun that combines both. I want something that can be used for target shooting, competition shoots, and hunting. I would also like the gun to be compatable with the many accesories available on the market. Thanks for any info.

Yeah, a budget of a thousand bucks is going to give you pretty slim pickings with those requirements. Maybe look into a tactical-ized Ruger Mini-14/30?

only NR options under 1k are T97, M305, mini 14, SKS, JR carbines (pistol calibers). The only thing that you can use for big game that is worth using is the M305. Go up to 2 grand and you barely have anymore options (maybe a RA XCR-l on sale).

Non restricted and under $1000? That is going to be a tough one. Perhaps a used VZ58 on the EE. I realize that they are considered "red rifles", but that may be as close as you get.

I was thinking of buying an SKS and dressing it up to look more tactical. I wasn't sure what a hunting/black rifle would cost and didn't think dressing up an SKS would be worth it. Reading the replies about cost makes the SKS look pretty good.

The best bang for your buck is honestly:
Daniel Defense $1200 off EE, be patient.
Tikka T3 with Bushnell optic off EE $850 again be patient.

If you try doing everything for $1000 you'll get nothing of quality.

What will you be hunting?

To offer a black rifle ~feel, and reasonable accuracy for hunting, I'd suggest an 858.
I've competed with 7.62x39, and hunted with it, but in a different platform.

Check Trade Ex for hunting rifles, $300ish for something with experience.
That might leave enough for one of the AR deals.

Your budget is disproportional to your wants. Something's gotta give.

The key word here fellas is non restricted for under $1000.

Sadly bud, the only good black rifle that can be had for that price range is an AR which is a named Restricted.

Your other decent options are the following:
Vz-58
T97NSR

There are a few others, but in mumy opinion, not worth mentioning. Both of the above rifles walk the line of being a "red rifle" as well due to thier background, but I assume you meant "tactical style" when you said Black rifle.

The Vz is the best pick up and shoot it how it is rifle in my opinion. Nothing makes it bad, but nothing makes it amazing either. Its just a sound choice for rifle in this price range.

The T97 has a lot of things that are all wrong from factory, but boasts many good attributes that lend itself to being a pretty awesome Black Rifle once fixed. The question is how much are you willing to pay to correct those issues and in the end just have a T97 chinese quality built rifle for a price boardering used Tavor territory. Some times it is cheapest just to buy once and cry once.

I highly recommend against spending to much on an SKS. I was a gun newb 3 years ago and got my first gun, an SKS. Being a Tacticool Fool, I got the ATI folding Stock, 2x tapco 5/20 mags, NC star beyonet mounted bipod, scope and scope mount, murry spring assisted firing pin and of coarse a laser. The thing weighed a ton, was unwieldy even with the folder stock, bipod was ####ty, and the mags required 3 hands to do a mag change. Scope didnt hold zero and blocked the use of stripper clips.

It was a learning curve that was costly, and only left me wanting more as time went on. Shortly there after the Vz58 swept me off my feet. Great rifle, but I strolled apon the Tavor thanks to TV-PressPass' youtube channel, and after that I had my eyes on the prize and all I could save went towards getting a Tavor. When the day finally came around to get one I was happy as a pig in mud, and as time has progressed I have only gotten happier with it with the addition of quality glass and other accessories.

Seriously consider your actions, and know that if your one of those people that is wanting a quality rig, buying once and crying once is the way to go.

Since you can't hunt (in Canada anyways) with an AR, how about an affordable AR (if there is such a thing) for range shoots/competitions and an affordable bolt gun for hunting.
If you don't mind buying rifles in the lower end of the price/quality range you just might be able to get both of these rifles for under $1,000 used (maybe even with a scope on the bolt rifle). You could probably buy both rifles new for only a little more then a $1,000 w/o taxes if you look carefully for a sale or two...

However if you are really set on having one rifle that is NR that does it all, save your coins for something like a Famae 540 or 542 rifle or Robinson Arms XCR-L or -M rifle in .223 or .308 depending on what you are hunting because for a $1,000 a Ruger Mini 14 or 30 or a 858 is all you'll find and neither are really close to an AR.

An M-305 is a NR .308 semi.-auto. rifle that could do it all, but isn't very tactiool or compact for CQB stuff.

Maybe a good deal on a used and Non-Restricted AR-180B would be the best compromise if you can manage .223 for hunting, but I would expect one of those to sell for around $1,500+/- w/o optic.

Cheers D

Correct, limited options under $1000.
Controversial subject here, but since no ones mentioned it, and as far as "you-get-what-you-pay-for" its actually pretty decent and you seem like that type of guy from your post.

Kel Tec SU-16.
About $700 stock, fits all AR stocks with the adapter, buy the aftermarket AR handguard...
You have basically a cheap, non-restricted AR (looking thing) in .223, that fits most accessories, and your description pretty much.
Yeah, it's plasticy, but once again, you get what you pay for. Buy one new so you get a warranty because at this price things go wrong (who cares if you got the warranty). Should be good to go.

Not sure what you are hunting... varmint/small game with the kel tec SU16 or mini 14 seem to be decent options.

I think the advice of buying 2 rifles is the way to go. There is just not 1 that does it all, regardless of what your grampy told you.

There's combo deal on the EE that may work out for you.

good luck

I think I saw a Norc M14 in a Sage EBR chassis for $1,300 on EE. I'd say cough up the extra $300

Very heavy though. Not a true black rifle per say, more of a Semi-Auto-Precision-Rifle/Battle-rifle. Far from Ideal for use in things like CQB or 3 gun.

Other then that, its a pretty bad ass option, but then ammo is more expensive and still likely requires optics after the initial purchase cost of $1300
