here is 2 pictures of some fair sized deer on the island. one was rutting hard and had lost a lot of weight and the other was just starting so he still had some decent bulk to him. both of these bucks would be considered "good bucks"
if you want some good info and a great read. karle granlund of granlund firearms in campbell river wrote a book called "blacktail secrets" with lots of stories from hunting the island as well as some blacktail hunting tips.
one tip i will pass on that i have heard from multiple old timers who have hunted blacktails a lot.
if you jump a deer and it runs into the bushes to the north you should immediately go either east or west and often the deer will try to double back or come in from the side to see what it was that spooked them.
I'd want more gun than my .223 for those boys.
Dave that's a real nice buck, very characteristic of nice BT's with the antlers rounding up and together (as opposed to a mulie that goes out and is more "square" for those that don't know BT's)
Those pics make me want to go hunt Haida Gwaii blacktails!

so who's got some pics of some gwaii deer?
must be some around here

Pretty much - she was depressed after returning from that trip - from such a high to such a low!
Digging for Razor clams on North Beach. This place has the best razor clam fishery in the world. One day we were eating deer loins with garden potatoes and vegetables and the next day a huge pot of clam chowder. Naturally both dishes were prepared and consumed on the beach.

And nothing like wood heat to warm bones chilled by damp ocean breezes. This is in the longhouse at Hiellen Long Houses on North Beach ....

The dog might be done his meal by the time you got back with another!
True, but we did shoot 10. That, minus what we ate, left us with about 170lbs of almost boneless meat. I say almost because we left a couple of hind legs whole for large family get together feasts.
