Blacktail on the Islands

mainland blacktails, all taken in the upper lilooet river valley over the past 10 or so years
I am , at heart, a blacktail deer hunting junky LOL

these two were from a double header day about 10 years ago, real cool antler on the one

and this years trip ;)

trying to find my haida gwaii pics but I think they might all be in video format

p.s. when we went on our trip a couple years ago I was told by the CO's office (100 mile) that non residents of haida gwaii can only possess 5 deer coming back from the Island. Meaning that to fill a 15 deer allowable bag limit for the season, one would need to make 3 trips.
How accurate that is, I dunno, but it came from the mouth of a BC CO with a few decades experience so I took him at his word LOL

here is 2 pictures of some fair sized deer on the island. one was rutting hard and had lost a lot of weight and the other was just starting so he still had some decent bulk to him. both of these bucks would be considered "good bucks"
if you want some good info and a great read. karle granlund of granlund firearms in campbell river wrote a book called "blacktail secrets" with lots of stories from hunting the island as well as some blacktail hunting tips.

one tip i will pass on that i have heard from multiple old timers who have hunted blacktails a lot.
if you jump a deer and it runs into the bushes to the north you should immediately go either east or west and often the deer will try to double back or come in from the side to see what it was that spooked them.

I'd want more gun than my .223 for those boys.

I travel to Haida Gwaii 2 or 3 times a year for work. I'm there for a couple weeks at a time some times.
The weather in the winter months can be pretty nasty. The ferry can be delayed for as much as a week from my experience.

A couple friends hunt there they use both a 30-06 and told me a head shot is important. Not a lot of meat don't want to ruin any.

Here is one just south of Tlell.

Dave that's a real nice buck, very characteristic of nice BT's with the antlers rounding up and together (as opposed to a mulie that goes out and is more "square" for those that don't know BT's)

Thanks Clarke, I caught him out on a windy rainy miserable morning in the fog high up almost ten years ago now. He wasn't as nice as that cranker you posted up though.

so cute and fuzzy hehehe
those and montaine's pics are very representative of the size of deer we encountered as well.
I did see one 2 point buck that was a whole lot bigger than any of the other deer we saw , but in that thick bush, he was gone in an instant and didn't offer me a shot.

Your pup has become good looking dog.:d

Thanks 'Boo - make sure you get in touch with me when you are up here next.

Your dog is thinking "Well I got mine, now you go get yours.".

Pretty much - she was depressed after returning from that trip - from such a high to such a low! :)

Digging for Razor clams on North Beach. This place has the best razor clam fishery in the world. One day we were eating deer loins with garden potatoes and vegetables and the next day a huge pot of clam chowder. Naturally both dishes were prepared and consumed on the beach.

Notice the islands in the background - Prince of Whales Island in Alaska

And nothing like wood heat to warm bones chilled by damp ocean breezes. This is in the longhouse at Hiellen Long Houses on North Beach ....

The dog might be done his meal by the time you got back with another!

True, but we did shoot 10. That, minus what we ate, left us with about 170lbs of almost boneless meat. I say almost because we left a couple of hind legs whole for large family get together feasts.
