Now owning both models and having had the opportunity to examine them in detail, I must say that I would take the BM59 over the M14 for just about any application. The BM59 has:
- Lighter (compensated) recoil and muzzle-rise
- Sturdier magazines
- Integral Bipod
- Rifle Grenade launching capability
- Folding Buttstock option (Paracadisiti and Alpini models)
- Far less costly to produce due to the recycling of modified M1 Garand Receivers and component parts

The BM59 is one case where the Italians were smarter, faster, and more economical than the USA when it came to Battle Rifle design, production and fielding....
