I prefer detachable magazines. I've been using them for about three decades and aparently I can't lose them even when carrying half a dozen at a time for days on end.

I have never lost one either. That being said I do know a few guys who have. Carrying a rifle half the day through the woods and across bogs. It's not hard to inadvertently hit the latch and drop the mag.

I dont see the point in needing to have more then one clip readily available for big game hunting.

If I can manage to some how empty out all 6 of my shots out of my bolt action rifle and still need more shots in a quick fashion then;

I'll give up hunting as im a bad shot
Ive killed enough deer already have work to do
I'll be dead cause the angry bear ate me

Detachable. I have never forgotten my mag at home. I have also never forgotten to bring ammo on a hunting trip and had to buy it at some little store in the middle of nowhere.

I like the detach mag, especially in cold weather. I have never lost a detach mag, but then, I've never forgottten to take ammo on a trip either.
I have used a Browning A-Bolt for nearly 20 years, and I like their system: the unload is quick and convenient, so is the load, and that mag is totally secure. I think it's the best of both worlds.

I like detachable for run and gunning ( not road hunting ... jerks ;) as well if you are doing drives or pushes its convient. As well when hunting with others its a nice to just pop a mag out when meeting for lunch or something , and having it ready incase an animal comes out during lunch. Also detachable mags mean you dont loose any cartridges in the tall grass.

Although i do hunt with tube mags and hinged floor plate guns. I see the advantage of a DM

I'll take blind/hinged floorplate. I don't mind taking the extra 5 seconds to load and unload, and I find them more reliable than detatchable mags.

Hmm..a guy with a rifle that holds 6 claiming no-one needs an extra mag holding 3?.. 3+3=6

I unsuspectedly stepped into the middle of a flock of wolves in 2' of snow in a slightly overgrown clearcut in N.O. one yr. Granted my bolt gun only held 4 including the one in the tube, but I could have used a clip that day;)

Well I should have said Internal mag instead of blind mag. What I hate the most about my Tikka M695 is I have to physically remove the mag in order to reload. That means removing the mag laying down the rifle and reloading the mag. It's not unheard of to have to make more than 3 shots while hunting.

Or you can simply carry a spare loaded magazine. As for laying the gun down, I use a sling when hunting.

Does that mean you can't top load a DM rifle? or you just can't top load a DM Tikka

I voted DM.
I have at least 1 extra mag for all my big game rifles, and up to 5 for the varmint guns.

I have never ever lost a single item when hunting... yet! .... It's only a matter of time I suppose, but I'm covered.

The extra mag is not just in case of loss, but also in case of damage to the primary. That seems more likely to me than losing it.

Road hunting or on foot??? :stirthepot2:

My question exactly!!!
I hunt almost always on foot, but on occasion I road hunt with my Dad who doesn't get around so well these days.
If I'm road hunting out of the pick-up I prefer a rifle with a detachable-mag.
On foot I have no preference really. Hinged floor-plate or blind is just fine by me.

I can't top load my Tikka (single stack mag)but I could top load my Parker hale (staggered mag).

I have both floorplate and DM and I prefer the DM for my hunting purposes. I love the ease of unloading and 'proving clear' to my buddies. No worries that way! I'm usually hunting (groundhogs) in fair weather (not snow) so dropping cartridges on the ground is no big issue. Now with my latest project (from Del Selins, Vernon, BC), I bought a Rem M700 SPS DM in .243. I sold the .243 barrel and set up a switch barreled .308 and .22-250 for deer/big game and varmint (groundhogs & coyotes) rig. Now I have the best of all worlds :D...

I have a DM setup that feeds the .308 and it's sibling cartridges like: .243, .260, 7mm-08 and I get to use the exact same Remington magazine for all or any of these future switch barrel projects down the road.

Most of the year the SPS DM is with the .22-250 barrel for earthpigs and coyotes. :)

And the best part is that I can stuff more cartridges from the top of the breech when I need to top up, just as if this rifle were a floorplate setup. Unlike that super accurate CZ527 .223 a buddy of mine showed me. You could only feed cartridges using a magazine!

Cheers and use what works for your game and budget!

Ya, but I know guys who carry three mags of 4 or 5 rounds each. Who needs 12 shots for big game hunting?

Ive heard shooting from other properties where an entire box of ammo was emptied in under a minute (BANGBANGBANGBANG...... BANGBANGBANGBANG......BANGBANGBANGBANG ........ BANGBANGBANGBANG....... BANGBANGBANGBANG) At the very least if he'd had a blind mag he'd of saved himself some money.

If we lived under different laws, preferences might change, but, in the real world - under the laws we have - detachable magazines are a huge advantage.
