So we can't drive around with a loaded gun while hunting. If our rifle has a detachable magazine then great! With a hinged floor plate or blind box if I have bullets in the box with my bolt out, is my firearm loaded or would I be ok if stopped by a CO or RCMP officer. This would be a great deal handier than trying to load it up when a quick shot is potentially going to happen. Anybody know the legalese on this situation?

How long does it take you to put 2 in from the top and close the bolt?
Practice a bit and have the cartridges in a handy spot that works for you.

Hmmm.... That made me think about the Browning .22 SA, Norinco JW-20 or similar rifles when the barrel is removed. The stock serves as a magazine and there is no way of firing a round without attaching the barrel. I can almost hear "But officer, that's only a loaded magazine."

Get one of the cheap elastic cartridge carriers for the buttstock. Either keep the rounds in it on the stock, or to be really, really safe, pull the elastic "thingy" onto your forearm. Let's you keep the rounds right where they are handy

It's not too long to slam a couple in but not as quick as a magazine. It just got me thinking the other day and wondered if it was possible.

Just leave the bolt open and drop a round in and close the bolt.

Not every gun can be loaded that way...

A friend with a model7 leaves his floor plate open and has a couple rounds in hand, when it's go time he drops them in the gun upside down and closes the floor plate... About as much time as it takes me to get a mag in a rifle.

Personally tho.... I prefer a single shot break action for hunting... My encore is FAST to load and is quieter when hunting from a blind or still hunting than any bolt gun I've ever owned.

Every province has different regulations for hunting. You can't ask a general question like yours and expect a definitive answer without even bothering to state where you are from. About the 10,000th time this sort of question has been posted on here.

Sorry I'm from BC. Out of curiosities sake....where in Canada can you drive around with a loaded gun?

what do you mean by loaded?

Chambered, or just the magazine charged?

I do believe the laws prohibits a cartridge in the rifle - period. bolt in or out. DM is the only option or like previous posters mention, leave the bolt open and drop them in after you get out of the vehicle.

Excerpt from NL Hunting Regulations:

"Firearms, Ammunition

It is unlawful:
To carry, transport or possess a loaded firearm in or on, or discharge a firearm from, any aircraft, motor vehicle, snow machine, or all-terrain vehicle. A firearm is considered to be loaded if there is a live shell or cartridge in the chamber or magazine, and the magazine is attached to the firearm in its usual position."

Or, um... You could maybe just... Not road hunt?

One of the biggest anti hunting laments I hear these days is complaints about hunters road hunting. Ethics aside, you're that much closer to the eye of the general public, and they begin to equate the rest of us with road hunters.

yeh I agree.... Road hunting is BS IMO!

an Im an Aussie! haha!

it can be ok to go for a drive around the bush and if you need meat or dog food to then by chance , shoot a deer. I couldn't imagine it with a bunch of guys driving round one big group of bush.

here in Victoria we are trying to stamp out illegal spotlighting off main/ country roads , sometimes quiet close to farm houses/ livestock. also a Law infringement of a loaded firearm in a driving vehicle. shooting from public road, loaded firearm on public road.

also in most cases, if your Abolt magazine has 3 in it an is beside your driver side door..... an your gun is in the back/front seat.... Your Gun is Loaded.

Yeah, that's because most of the complaints are generated by idiots shooting their goddamn guns out of their truck windows.

Where I hunt we are not anywhere near the anti's eyes, but we still travel around on public roads. This isn't a shoot the gun out the window or from my open door or leaning on my hood scenario. We travel through vast unpopulated areas surrounded by crown land and grazing reserve. It's just to be able to exit the vehicle quickly and efficiently when we see an animal that fits the bill. A detachable mag works great for this. I was just curious if anybody without one hunts this way and what they do?
